A summer orientation will be held at most MCPS high schools for incoming 9th graders and new students on Thurs., Aug. 23. There will be a half-day orientation for students to meet their teachers and principal, walk through their classes and become familiar with the school before the first full day of school on Aug. 27. Many middle schools also will hold a half-day orientation for incoming 6th graders and new students on Aug. 23. Schools www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/ Starting this year, parents of students in Grades 9–12 will get a detailed report of their child's progress toward graduation. It will be a way for high school students and their parents to monitor academic performance and progress toward fulfilling the requirements for a Maryland high school diploma. The Student Grades and Graduation Credit Report will accompany report cards that come at the end of the first and third marking periods. The report will include information on:
As part of the middle school reform effort, Montgomery County Public Schools is launching a Parent Academy this fall to help parents become more involved in their children’s education and development. In collaboration with local community-based organizations, the Parent Academy will offer free workshops to parents on a variety of topics in multiple languages. Starting this fall, free parent workshops will be offered in a number of locations in the county. MCPS Parent Academy www.mcpsparentacademy.org Have a question about the school system? The MCPS Call Center provides parents with a one-stop resource for accurate and timely information about school operations, programs and other general school system information. To accommodate parents' busy schedules, the Call Center will open 30 minutes earlier beginning Aug. 1. New hours for the Call Center will be Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Answers are available in English and Spanish. The number is 301-309-MCPS (6277). MCPS Call Center www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/contact/ In the first days of the school year, parents will receive information on free and reduced-price school meals (FARMS) and on setting up cafeteria accounts for their children. A free and reduced-price meal application will be sent home with students. Eligible families should complete the FARMS application and return it to your child’s school. More information on FARMS, cafeteria accounts and school menus are available on the Division of Food & Nutrition Services Web page. Division of Food & Nutrition Services http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/d...erv/index.shtm The schedule for report card distribution for the 2007-2008 school year is as follows:
www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/calendars/ Enrollment is now taking place for new students entering high school in the Northeast (NEC) and Downcounty (DCC) Consortium or middle school in the Middle School Magnet Consortium (MSMC). A new student is one who is not currently enrolled in MCPS. Parents should call the Division of Consortia Choice and Application Program Services (DCCAPS) at 301-649-8081 to schedule an appointment. In addition, the NEC, DCC, MSMC, and Application programs will be holding evening parent information meetings in the fall. The meetings are open to all parents of students enrolled in these programs. The meeting schedule will be mailed to students' homes and distributed by schools. It is also available now on the Web site: Division of Consortia Choice and Application Program Services (DCCAPS) http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/d.../schoolchoice/ When classes begin on Aug. 27, nearly 100,000 MCPS students will be riding a school bus every day. Starting out the school day on a positive note means making sure children have a safe and pleasant ride to school. Parents can help by making sure their children know their bus route number. They can also help their children understand that the bus is an extension of school, and that the standards of behavior in a classroom are also expected on the bus. The MCPS Department of Transportation Web site has links to school bus routes, tips on bus procedures in case of delays or weather emergencies and information on the Ride by the Rules campaign promoting bus safety.
