Police Investigate Stabbing at Colesville Post Office

Updated Information

Detectives from the 3rd District Investigative Section are investigating a stabbing that occurred this afternoon at the U.S. Post Office in Colesville.

Today, at approximately 2:18 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the U.S. Post Office located at 13217 New Hampshire Avenue for a report of a stabbing. Upon arriving, officers located a 58-year-old male suffering from multiple stab wounds. Based on witness accounts, officers placed a look out for the vehicle in which the suspect was observed leaving the post office. A few minutes later, officers observed the suspect vehicle approximately one mile away at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and MD Route 29. Officers stopped the vehicle and placed the suspect under arrest. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation revealed that the victim had been conducting business with a U.S. Postal worker inside the post office. The victim was asked to step aside to complete some paper work. Upon completing the paper work, the victim was motioned back to the counter by the employee. The suspect felt as if the victim had cut into the line.

The suspect then left the post office and waited in the vestibule for the victim to depart. At this time, the suspect attacked the victim. As the struggle ensued, two female U.S. Postal employee intervened in the confrontation, and at least one of the employees deployed pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the suspect. According to the Detective Sergeant leading this investigation, the actions of these employees may have saved the life of, but most definitely assisted in preventing further injury to, the victim.

At this time, the suspect is being identified as a 67-year-old male. His full identity will be released after he is officially charged.

Detectives are asking anyone that may have witnessed or anyone that has information about this incident to contact the 3rd District Investigative Section at 301-565-5835.
