| Planning Board Meetings Upcoming meetings: Visit the Agendas & Staff Reports web page for updates on Planning Board meetings and/or access to our meeting archives. Typically, meetings start at 9 a.m., Park and Planning Headquarters, 8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Everyone who speaks at a Planning Board meeting must register with the board assistant unless he or she has signed up in advance. Sign up online (typically available 10 days before a meeting) or register at the meeting by submitting our yellow form or a business card. We now stream the Planning Board meetings online. Zoning Rewrite Project Open Houses Planners are rewriting the Zoning Code to modernize antiquated, redundant zoning regulations and create new tools to help achieve goals in community plans. Attend the last of our six open houses to learn more about the project. | White Flint 2 This week, the Planning Board approved the scope of work for White Flint 2, an area between White Flint and the Rockville city limits. The plan will analyze land use, transportation and urban design in this community that will feel spin-off effects from a planned transformation of Rockville Pike, the introduction of rapid transit and the redevelopment in nearby Twinbrook. | | | Celebrate Trees this Arbor Day Brookside Nature Center is 'speaking for the trees' at its annual Forest Friends Festival on Sunday, April 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. For just $5, visitors will enjoy a wide variety of tree-related fun from riding into the tree canopy for a bird's eye view to watching skilled woodworkers and tree climbers display their craft. | Burtonsville Crossroads Plan to be Heard by Planning Board 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 3 (time approximate) Park and Planning Headquarters 8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring Planners will present the staff draft of the Burtonsville Crossroads Neighborhood Plan to the Planning Board. The plan envisions a community designed to serve the area with small businesses, retail, local services, offices, residential and open spaces for local events, conservation and recreation. A public hearing will be scheduled in June. |
| Weed Warriors Wanted Want to help battle non-native invasive plants? We'd love to have you - and there's no experience needed! Simply register with our volunteer office to participate in one of our weed warrior events that take place throughout the year. A staff member or trained Certified Weed Warrior will be on hand to give you a brief orientation at each worksite. Individuals and groups are welcome. | Apply for a Minor Master Plan Amendment Property owners and community groups in Montgomery County interested in addressing issues of land use, zoning or other community priorities in their neighborhoods may submit applications for minor master plan amendments to be considered by the Planning Board and County Council. With master plans updated just once every two decades, residents, community groups or property owners until now have been forced to wait many years to bring about small changes to land use or zoning in their areas. To address community needs more quickly, this process allows residents and others to achieve minor amendments to master plans.

| Council Approves Takoma Langley Crossroads Plan This week, the Montgomery County Council approved the Takoma Langley Crossroads Sector Plan. The plan recommends ways to improve pedestrian safety, create connections to public transportation, broaden housing opportunities and strengthen economic opportunities for businesses. |
| Save the Date for Affordable Housing Conference 8 a.m. Monday, May 7 Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center 5701 Marinelli Road, North Bethesda The 21st annual conference will focus on housing, jobs, multi-family living opportunities, transit, transitional housing and more. | Wings of Fancy - Live Butterfly and Caterpillar Exhibit Surround yourself with hundreds of African, Asian, Costa Rican, and North American species of butterflies flying freely inside a Conservatory during Wings of Fancy at Brookside Gardens. Enjoy learning about the life cycle of these amazing creatures, and what you can do to attract native caterpillars and butterflies to your backyard as we "think globally, and act locally." | Call for Hyattstown Mill Arts Project The Hyattstown Mill Arts Project announces a call to artists for a juried exhibition of artworks exploring the concept of all objects and ideas that are "Invasive." Open to all artists and media. Artwork may be interior works or outdoor pieces. There is a $5 entry fee per artist. Entrance fee is waived for HMAP members. Accepted work must be hand delivered to the Hyattstown Mill on Saturday, June 2, 2012. We have similar measures in place in Montgomery County, where we've had requirements for developers for almost a decade to create a pedestrian, bicyclist, and transit-friendly and accessible environment. | How Shady is Your Neighborhood? | Planners have analyzed Montgomery County's tree canopy as part of an effort to improve the local climate and energy efficiency of urban areas. The more shade, the less energy required for cooling homes and cars. While much of the county boasts a healthy a tree canopy, some urban areas lack shade - right where it is needed most.
