This morning at approximately 8:31 a.m., Fire/Rescue personnel and Montgomery County Police 6th District officers responded to the MARC train crossing, located at 17041 Oakmont Avenue, for the report of a pedestrian struck by a train.
The preliminary investigation determined that the 17-year-old male was walking next to the tracks with earbuds in his ears, listening to music. He did not hear the train blow its horn and was struck by the train. He remained conscious and alert while Fire/Rescue personnel transported him to a local hospital, where he was determined to have non-life threatening injuries.
During the investigation, both sets of CSX rails and the vehicle crossing on Oakmont Avenue were closed.
As of 10:30 a.m., the CSX rails and the vehicle crossing on Oakmont Avenue are re-opened and operational.
Police are using this opportunity to remind the public of the following train safety tips taken from the Common Sense website (
http://www.commonsenseuseit.com/).
- Don’t walk along or near train tracks.
- When waiting for a train to approach, always remain alert and stay away from the platform edge or the train tracks.
- When crossing train tracks, cross at a designated crossing point.
- Always obey the flashing lights and lowered crossing gates.
