Metro Track Work for Weekend of January 27-29

Metro will advance major rebuilding work over the weekend of January 27-29. The work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and continue through system closing on Sunday.

Red Line

Crews will continue to advance NTSB-recommended track circuit replacement, a key step toward restoring automatic train operations. This weekend's work will take place between Dupont Circle and Van Ness, with buses replacing trains between those two stations. Two stations -- Woodley Park and Cleveland Park -- will be closed, with alternate shuttle service provided.
  • Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday, shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between Dupont Circle and Van Ness.
  • Red Line trains will operate between Shady Grove and Van Ness and between Dupont Circle and Glenmont. During daytime hours, every other train from Dupont Circle will turn back at Silver Spring.
  • Woodley Park and Cleveland Park stations will be closed.
  • Customers traveling through the work zone should allow about 25 minutes of additional travel time. All other customers should allow about 10 minutes of additional travel time.

Last trains to operate before track work begins:
  • Eastbound: Departing from Shady Grove at 9:28 pm, at Dupont Cir. 9:58 pm, arriving at Glenmont at 10:29 pm.
  • Westbound: Departing from Glenmont at 9:20 pm, at Van Ness 9:59 pm, arriving at Shady Grove at 10:23 pm.

Red Line Last Train Information[list][*]On Friday and Saturday, the last Red Line train from Shady Grove will depart at 2:00 a.m. (30 minutes earlier than normal). The last train from Glenmont will arrive at Dupont Circle 3:10 a.m. The last train from Van Ness will depart at 3:40 a.m., arrive at Shady Grove at 4:06 a.m.[*]On Sunday, the the last Red Line train from Shady Grove will depart at 11:00 p.m. (30 minutes earlier than normal). The train from Glenmont will arrive at Dupont Circle 12:10 a.m. The last train from Van Ness will depart at 12:40 am, arrive at Shady Grove at 1:04 am.[/LIST

Orange Line
  • Trains will single track between McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations for rail renewal work.
  • Orange Line trains will depart Vienna and New Carrollton every 16 minutes throughout the weekend. Service will be coordinated with the Blue Line to provide service every 8 minutes at stations from Rosslyn to Stadium-Armory.
  • Customers should allow 10-15 minutes of additional travel time.

Blue Line
  • Trains will single track between McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations for rail renewal work.
  • Blue Line trains will depart Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center every 16 minutes throughout the weekend. Service will be coordinated with the Orange Line to provide service every 8 minutes at stations from Rosslyn to Stadium-Armory.
  • Customers should allow 10-15 minutes of additional travel time.

Green Line
  • Trains will single track between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue for rail renewal.
  • Green Line trains will depart Greenbelt and Branch Avenue every 16 minutes throughout the weekend.
  • Customers should allow 10-15 minutes of additional travel time.

Yellow Line
  • Due to Green Line track work, Yellow Line service will operate between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square only. Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Square should use Green Line trains to complete their trip.
  • Yellow Line trains will depart Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square every 16 minutes throughout the weekend.
  • Customers should allow 10-15 minutes of additional travel time.
Metro is advancing a six-year, $5 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that is focused on safety and bringing the Metro system into a state of good repair. In FY2012, the CIP includes projects to replace escalators; retrofit track; replace critical track circuitry and equipment along the right of way; rehabilitate third-rail power systems, running rail and track pads; modernize 12 stations; replace 100 Metrobuses and the rehabilitate 100 more; renovate three bus garages; and install 30 new track turnouts.
