Transit task force to brief Citizens Advisory Board Tuesday, January 17

The County Executive's transit task force will provide an update on the status of its work, a sense of the need and a sense of the look and feel of the envisioned system at Tuesday's meeting of the Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board.

The 7 pm meeting will begin with a briefing on current crime statistics.  The task force update is expected to begin at 7:30 pm.

Location:  Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, 2nd floor, 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda

Women's Legislative Briefing

The Commissions for Women of Montgomery County and Prince George's County will host the Women's Legislative Briefing at the Universities at Shady Grove on Sunday, January 29, 2012, 12:30-6 pm .

There will be seminars led by experts on topics ranging from women in the workforce to health care, safety, justice and human rights.  Participants will hear the latest on state and federal legislation affecting women and families in Maryland, learn about effective legislative advocacy and have a great opportunity to network.

Following the seminars, there will be a reception for participants, presenters and elected county and state officials.

Registration is required and can be done online.

Credit card settlement mailouts

More than 10 million checks valued at $18.04 are being mailed to credit card holders to settle claims from 2008 over the improper setting and disclosure of foreign currency conversion fees. The only problem is that the envelopes easily can be mistaken for junk mail and pitched without being opened.  Visit the story ABC did on this to see what the envelopes look like.

For more information, contact the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection.  The telephone number is
240-777-3636.

Postage rate increases

The USPS is set to increase postage rates on January 22. For example, the first-class stamp, currently 44 cents, will increase to 45 cents.  Since virtually all first-class stamps now are "forever" stamps , buying them in quantity before January 22 can result in savings, small though they may be.
