Default State Highway Administration Resurfaces I-270

State Highway Administration Resurfaces I-270

Resurfacing Project to Occur at Night; Motorists Should Expect Delays

(August 24, 2011) – Next week, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a safety and resurfacing project along more than one mile of I-270 from I-495 (Capital Beltway) to MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road). The $2.9 million project should be completed by summer 2012, weather permitting.

Crews will replace the center concrete barrier, patch various sections of the roadway, grind, pave travel lanes and install new pavement markings. SHA will also clean drainage inlets and perform minor landscaping work.

SHA will begin work on the concrete barrier wall after Labor Day. SHA’s contractor, American Infrastructure of Fallston will remove the top layer of pavement and then pave and re-stripe I-270 beginning spring 2012. SHA has scheduled work during hours below to avoid morning and evening peak travel times.

Northbound I-270
  • Single lane closures Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Double lane closures Sunday-Thursday between midnight and 5 a.m.
Southbound I-270
  • Single lane closures Monday-Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Double lane closures Sunday-Thursday between midnight and 5 a.m.
SHA will use concrete barrier, cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.

More than 124,000 motorists use I-270 between I-495 and MD 187 each day. During construction, motorists may want to consider using alternate routes such as MD 355 (Rockville Pike), MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) or MD 189 (Falls Road).

SHA reminds motorists to be aware that several large projects will be taking place at the same time and in relatively the same vicinity. These projects include resurfacing along I-495 between US 29 (Colesville Road) and the Seminary Road overpass, as well as a major bridge rehabilitation project on I-495 over Northwest Branch, west of MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue). The projects underway highlight SHA’s commitment to keeping roads in safe and good condition. Most of the work is taking place during off peak hours to avoid construction-related delays.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone.

Maryland now features FREE 511 traveler information! Call 511 or 1-855-GOMD511 or visit: www.md511.org for current travel information.
