Officers Seek Public’s Help to
Locate Suspect Wanted for Airbag Theft
Officers from the 6th District specializing in investigating thefts from vehicles in their district are asking the public for help to locate a suspect wanted for the theft of a vehicle airbag that occurred last year.
Throughout the fall of 2010, approximately 30 thefts of airbags occurred in Gaithersburg. In 15 of the cases, windows were broken from unattended Nissan vehicles to enable the suspect to gain entry to the vehicle.
On November 9, 2010, a white 2008 Nissan Altima was broken into between 7:05 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. while it was parked on the 3rd level of the public parking garage located at 108 Olde Town Avenue in Gaithersburg. When the 27-year-old female victim returned to her car at 6:30 p.m., she found that a window had been smashed and the airbag and a roll of quarters had been taken. Investigating officers found several drops of blood in the vehicle. That evidence was recovered and submitted for DNA analysis.
In February, investigating officers learned that there was a match in the national DNA database. A warrant was obtained for 25-year-old David Alexander Portillo-Henriquez of an unknown address. The warrant charges him with theft of property with a value between $1,000 and $10,000. His current whereabouts remain unknown, but he has been known to frequent Ft. Washington, Maryland; Talbot County, Maryland; and Fairfax, Virginia. It remains under investigation as to whether Portillo-Henriquez will be linked to any of the other incidents of airbag theft that occurred last year in Gaithersburg.
Anyone with information about where David Alexander Portillo-Henriquez (AKA Augustin Portillo Gonzales) can be found should call the 6th District station at 240-773-5700. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or 240-773-TIPS (8477).
