Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide/Sex Section are investigating the murder of a female store employee and the sexual assault of her female co-worker that occurred last night in a woman’s athletic clothing store in Bethesda.

This morning at approximately 8:00 a.m., a female employee arrived at the “lululemon athletica” clothing store located at 4856 Bethesda Avenue. She found the front door unlocked and when she stepped inside could tell that items in the store had been disturbed. She also heard some faint noise coming from the back of the store. Realizing that something was wrong, she left the store to seek help and call police.

At approximately 8:12 a.m., 2nd District police responded to the store for the report of a burglary. Officers found a 30-year-old female store employee dead inside at the back of the store. They also found another store employee, a 27-year-old female, bound and injured, but still alive. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Through the course of the investigation it was learned that the two victims had closed the store at 9:00 p.m. and left a short time later. One of the victims realized that she had left something inside the store and did not have the means to get back inside. She phoned her co-worker and asked if the co-worker would come back to the store to let her in. The co-worker agreed. They unlocked the store and entered.

It is believed that shortly thereafter two men, dressed all in black with faces and hands covered, entered the store. A robbery of commercial proceeds occurred, one victim was murdered, and the other victim was sexually assaulted. It is not known if any other property was taken from the store.

Suspects Still at Large

Because the suspects wore masks and gloves, the race of the suspects is not known. One suspect is described as being 6’ tall, the other a little over 5’3” tall. No further description is currently available.

The body of the murder victim will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Anyone who has information about this homicide and sexual assault is asked to call the Homicide/Sex Section at 240-773-5070. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or 240-773-TIPS (8477). Updated Information

A team of detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide/Sex Section has been dedicated to investigate the March 11, 2011, homicide and sexual assault of 30-year-old Jayna Troxel Murray, from the 1000 block of Arlington Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia; and the sexual assault of her 27-year-old female co-worker. These incidents occurred inside the “lululemon athletica” women’s athletic clothing store located at 4856 Bethesda Avenue.

Today detectives provided an update to their investigation. They are confirming that the two employees closed the business at 9:00 p.m. and set the store’s alarm at 9:45 p.m. They left the store. They returned and entered the front door at 10:05 p.m. to retrieve property that they had left behind. It is believed that shortly thereafter the two suspects, who dressed in all-dark clothing and were wearing masks and gloves, entered the store and attacked both women. It has now been confirmed that both women were sexually assaulted.

Alecia Pulman, a spokesperson for lululemon athletica announced today that the company’s corporate office is offering a reward in the amount of $125,000. To be eligible for the lululemon athletica reward and the up-to-$1,000 reward offered by Crime Solvers, and a $10,000 reward offered by Federal Realty in Bethesda, callers must call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or 240-773-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be provided by typing “MCPD” plus the tip on a cell phone or PDA and texting it to 274637 (CRIMES). Callers may remain anonymous. These rewards are offered for information provided to the tip lines that leads to the arrest and/or indictment of the persons responsible for these felony crimes. Several other businesses based in Bethesda are currently in the process of making arrangements to add to the reward funds. Any community members who would like to make reward contributions can send checks to the Montgomery County Police Media Services Division at MCP Headquarters, 2350 Research Boulevard, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

On Saturday, March 12, a female store manager arrived to open the store at approximately 8:00 a.m. She found the front door unlocked and when she stepped inside could tell that items in the store had been disturbed. She also heard some faint noise coming from the back of the store. Police were called at approximately 8:12 a.m., and 2nd District officers responded to the store for the report of a burglary. They found Murray dead inside at the back of the store. They also found her 27-year-old female co-worker bound and injured, but still alive. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

In addition to the murder and sexual assaults, a robbery of commercial proceeds occurred. It has not yet been determined if any other property was taken from the store.

Because the suspects wore masks and gloves, the race of the suspects is not known. One suspect is described as being 6’ tall, the other a little over 5’3” tall. No further description is currently available.

An autopsy is being performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause of death.

Anyone who has information about this homicide and sexual assaults and is not interested in becoming eligible for a reward is asked to call the Homicide/Sex Section at 240-773-5070. Callers may remain anonymous.

Detectives Announce an Arrest for the Homicide of Jayna
Murray that Occurred at the Lululemon Athletica Store

Send  an Online Tip or send the police a Text Tip

A team of detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide/Sex Section and forensic technicians has been dedicated to investigating the homicide and alleged sexual assault of 30-year-old Jayna Troxel Murray, from the 1000 block of Arlington Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia; and the alleged sexual assault of her 27-year-old female co-worker. The murder and alleged sexual assaults occurred on March 11, inside the “lululemon athletica” women’s athletic clothing store located at 4856 Bethesda Avenue in Bethesda.

Today detectives announced the results of their extensive investigation. Investigators determined that the “victim” co-worker, Brittany Erin Norwood, from an unconfirmed address in Washington, D.C., murdered Jayna Murray and fabricated an account of the incident. After further investigation it was determined that neither woman was sexually assaulted. Norwood was arrested this afternoon at the Montgomery County Police Headquarters in Rockville. She is being charged with first-degree murder, and will be held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center. The exact motive for this homicide remains under investigation but it is known that Norwood and Murray were engaged in a verbal argument prior to the murder. Forensic Services technicians recovered two sets of bloody foot prints inside the store. One set was determined to belong to Norwood. The second set of foot prints was determined to have been made from a pair of shoes for use by lululemon customers when determining the appropriate length of pants. The shoes were recovered in the store during the processing of the scene.

Much of the information about what had occurred had been provided to detectives by Norwood. It is now known that she made up her account that there were two male suspects dressed all in black wearing masks and gloves. It was confirmed through the investigation that the store alarm was set at 9:45 p.m. and that the two women entered the store at 10:05 p.m. It was confirmed that on Saturday, March 12, a female store manager arrived to open the store at approximately 8:00 a.m. They also found Norwood bound and injured, but still alive. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment and was released later in the week.

An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore determined the cause of Murray’s death to be blunt force trauma and stab wounds.

The Montgomery County Police Department wishes to express its gratitude to the business community organized by the Greater Bethesda Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce, the Crime Solvers organization, and to concerned community members for their contributions to a reward fund for information that lead to the arrest and/or indictment of the suspect(s) responsible for this felony crime. The investigation is continuing but at this time because Norwood’s arrest came from detectives’ investigation and not from a tip, there will not be a reward distribution.

Text-a-Tip Program:
Type “MCPD” plus the tip on your cell phone or PDA and text it to 274637 (CRIMES). The text message is encrypted and an alias is generated, masking the identity of the sender from the police. The police have no way of determining the user’s identity. An anonymous 2 way dialogue is possible with investigators.

Brittany Erin Norwood
