What constitutes an actual 9-1-1 emergency call:- A fire, a collapse of a building, roadway, or bridge with people trapped.
- A crime, especially in progress; such as – a robbery, a kidnapping, a hostage situation, a rape, a burglary or theft in progress, etc.
- A serious car accident, especially if someone is injured/trapped, live wires have come down, or a building is damaged.
- A medical emergency; such as – unconscious person, a person gasping or having breathing difficulties, a heart attack or symptoms of a stroke, allergic reaction, bleeding, etc.
When NOT to call 9-1-1:- For a ride to the Emergency Room for a non-life threatening ailment.
- To report a crime that occurred earlier, that is not a life threatening event; such as – a theft, vandalism, lost property, etc.
- To report damage from a storm that is NOT life threatening; such as a tree down that did not cause structural damage or has taken down live wires.
- For a joke/prank or because you need someone to talk to. NOTE: in many jurisdictions, abuse of misuse of 9-1-1 is punishable by fines and/or incarceration.
When calling 9-1-1, remember to: speak clearly and slowly. Be prepared to provide the following information:- The location of the emergency; include the street address, room # and floor (if applicable)
- The phone number you are calling from.
- The nature and details of your emergency.
- Your name.
When speaking with the 9-1-1 operator, listen carefully for he/she may have questions in order to obtain additional information that could assist with the emergency. Try to remain calm.
