Detectives from the Montgomery County Police 1st District Investigative Section are asking for assistance from the public to identify suspects involved in a pickpocketing incident that occurred last month in Rockville.

On January 18, 2010, at 6:43 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the 3200 block of N. Leisure World Boulevard in Silver Spring for the report of a missing wallet. The 79-year-old female victim had been running errands and when she got home couldnít find her wallet. She determined that the last time she definitely remembered using the wallet was at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the Trader Joeís grocery store located at 12268 Rockville Pike (map location 1). She remembered that she had her purse in the top of her shopping cart. After she had gotten home and couldnít find her wallet in her purse she called Visa to report her card lost and was told that there had been a large purchase made at the Best Buy store at 15750 Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg (map location 2). When she notified MasterCard she was told that a large purchase had been made at a Target store in Rockville.

Through the course of the investigation by the 1st District Investigative Section, surveillance photographs were obtained of three different suspects. A female suspect in a tan coat was photographed as she purchased thousands of dollars worth of gift cards and electronics at the Target store located at 5700 Bou Avenue in Rockville (map location 3). The gift cards were redeemed a short time later in Silver Spring by a male suspect and a female suspect wearing a denim jacket. Other gift cards were used in the White Marsh and Owings Mills areas of Baltimore. And on January 19, one of the gift cards was redeemed in Long island, New York.

Montgomery County Police want to remind our community members that pickpockets frequently target women and especially senior women in stores such as grocery stores which have shopping carts. Sometimes the theft occurs by distractionÖone person asking the victim for help, while another takes her wallet. But many times it occurs because a purse is found to be easily accessible in a shopping cart. Female shoppers are encouraged to keep their purses closed, carried close to the body, and never left unattended.

Anyone who recognizes any of the suspects or has any knowledge of this pickpocket incident is asked to call the 1st District Investigative Section at 240-773-6090. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information provided to them that leads to an arrest and/or indictment for this crime.
