COUNTY NEWS

First District Open House - The 1st District Station opens its doors for tours, demonstrations, and activities for the whole family on Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 12 pm – 3 pm at 1451 Seven Locks Rd, Rockville, MD. There will be demonstrations by Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), a Maryland National Capital Park Police horse-mounted officer, K-9 officers with canine partners, and motorcycle officers. A U.S. Park Police helicopter and the MCP Command Bus will be available for viewing. MC Fire/Rescue personnel will also attend. Activities for children include an appearance by Apple Dumpling the Clown, and a moon bounce. Child fingerprinting will be available.

Everyone is welcome to attend, but residents served by the 1st District are particularly encouraged to attend to meet the men and women of the 1st District dedicating themselves to keeping the greater Rockville communities safe.

Montgomery College Awarded $1.79 Million Grant to Support Nursing Program - Montgomery College will receive nearly $1.8 million over five years from the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Nurse Support Program II (NSP II). This initiative addresses the shortage of nurses in Maryland and works to increase the number of nursing graduates Montgomery College produces. Crossing Guard and School Zone Safety Reminders - Montgomery County Police are reminding drivers and residents that most county schools are opening Monday, August 31. Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board’s Land Use Committee Meeting -The Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board’s Land Use Committee will meet on Wednesday, September 9 at 7:00 pm at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, 2nd Floor Conference Room.
 
The topic of this meeting is the Growth Policy.  Dan Hardy, Chief of the Transportation Planning Division, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) will summarize the proposed Growth Policy submitted to the County Council on September 9.  Mr. Glenn Orlin, Deputy Staff Director for the Montgomery County Council will explains the process after the Council receives the proposed plan and how the Board can get involved.

Montgomery County Public Libraries’ Chevy Chase Branch to Reopen September 8 Following Mini Renovation; Family Fun Day to be Held September 12 - The Chevy Chase Library, located at 8005 Connecticut Ave., will reopen on Tuesday, September 8 at 10 am following completion of a three-week mini-renovation. Rockville City Hall to Close for Labor Day Holiday - Rockville City Hall will be closed on Monday, September 7, as the City celebrates Labor Day. Montgomery County Public Libraries Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with Family-oriented Programs – Montgomery County Public Libraries will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month -- September 15 to October 15 -- with free musical performances by Cantare and Mariachi Los Amigos at local branches. Labor Day Weekend Track Work to Close Three Yellow/Blue Line Stations - Weekend track work will close three Blue and Yellow Line Metrorail stations in Northern Virginia throughout the Labor Day weekend.  The Pentagon City, Crystal City, and Ronald Regan Washington National Airport Metrorail stations will be closed from 9:30 pm,  Friday, September 4, to closing, (midnight) Monday, September 7.  These stations will reopen at 5 am, on Tuesday, September 8.  For more information go to:  http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/news/PressReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=4029
