Rockville Councilmember Reappointed to
Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Committee
John Britton to Serve Second Term with Montgomery County Advisory Group
Rockville, Md., July 16, 2009 - Rockville City Councilmember John Britton was appointed earlier this month to serve a second term on the Montgomery County Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Advisory Committee.
"I am honored that the county executive appointed me to another term on the committee," Britton said. "The committee's work is extremely important in addressing and advocating for pedestrian and bicycle access and safety throughout the county. It is also an important mechanism for Rockville to exchange ideas on these issues with others around the county."
The committee is charged with advising the county executive and the County Council on the implementation of the Pedestrian Safety Initiative, which aims to reduce pedestrian-related collisions and to make communities safer, more walkable and more livable. The committee also reviews and advises the county on issues related to improving pedestrian safety.
The committee was originally formed in 2006 following the work of a Blue Ribbon Panel on Pedestrian Safety and Traffic. From that work, 54 recommendations emerged, including the creation of a Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee. In 2008, the County Council renamed the committee to include traffic.
The committee is made up of state, county and municipal elected officials, residents, school officials, county and state agencies, and police. It meets the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at various locations.
