Former Montgomery County Councilmember and School Board Member BLAIR G. EWING Passes Away Former Montgomery County Councilmember and former member of the Montgomery County Board of Education Blair G. Ewing passed away. Mr. Ewing, until very recently a member of the Maryland State Board of Education, was 75. As a business in Montgomery County, you can help. Setting up a school supply drive is easy. BETHESDA SUMMER CONCERT SERIES Will be held Thursday evenings at Veterans Park, corner of Norfolk & Woodmont Avenue, 6:00 pm -8:00 pm. All concerts are free. COUNTY FIREWORKS DISPLAYS IN GERMANTOWN AND KENSINGTON Montgomery County this year will again host two Independence Day fireworks displays on Saturday, July 4. Germantown Glory will be held at the Soccer Plex in the South Germantown Recreational Park, 18041 Central Park Circle. Mid-County Sparkles will be held at Albert Einstein High School, 11135 Newport Road, Kensington. Germantown Glory A concert by Bobby and the Believers will begin at 7 p.m., with fireworks at approximately 9:30 p.m. Blankets, chairs and picnics are welcome. No alcohol is permitted. Food vendors will be on site. The rain date – for fireworks only – is July 5. To reach the South Germantown Recreational Park from I-270, take exit 15B (Route 118 south) toward Germantown. Go for 2.8 miles and turn right onto Richter Farm Road. Go one mile and turn left onto Schaeffer Road. The park entrance is 0.3 miles on the right. For more information about Germantown Glory, call the Recreation Department at 240-777-6820. Mid-County Sparkles Pre-fireworks activities will include children’s activities and a musical concert with Superfly Disco beginning at 7:30 p.m. The fireworks will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. The viewing areas will be at the front of the school on the ball field and at the Newport Mill Middle School, 11311 Newport Mill Road. Since there will be no on site parking at either school or at adjacent properties, except for handicapped parking, shuttle buses will pick up passengers, beginning at 6:15 p.m., at Westfield Wheaton and the Wheaton Metro Station. Low lawn chairs and coolers are welcome. No alcoholic beverages are permitted. Rain date for the fireworks only is July 5. No shuttle service will be available on the 5th. THEME PARK TICKETS AVAILABLE AT A DISCOUNT The Recreation and Parks Department offers general admission tickets to many area theme parks at a discounted rate. All tickets entitle the participant to unlimited use of attractions normally included in a full-price admission ticket obtained at the park. Tickets are good any day for the 2009 operating season. ANNUAL CELEBRATE DAMASCUS EVENT SCHEDULED FOR JULY 10 AND 11 The 14th Annual Celebrate Damascus event will kick off on Friday, July 10 with a community parade at 7:00 pm beginning at Damascus High School, 25291 Ridge Road. There will also be musical entertainment on Lewis Drive and the evening will conclude with fireworks at approximately 9:20 pm. The historic Spanish Ballroom will be opened to the public and will feature displays that tell the story of Glen Echo Park from the late nineteenth century to 1960. The 1921 Dentzel carousel – a longtime Park favorite – will open at 12:00 pm. National Park Service rangers will lead a tour of the entire park and special craft activities will be on hand for children. SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM Facts: Approximately 27% of children in Montgomery County or 37,640 students are eligible for free or reduced meals each school year. The Summer Food Service Program feeds an average of 6,000 – 7,000 children each day at 105 sites throughout the county. Would you like to increase that number? One way to do this is by increasing the number of locations that provide Summer Food Programs. Would you like to get involved? Once a site is qualified to participate in the Summer Food Service Program, all children at the site are eligible to receive meals at no cost! Background: The Summer Food Service Program was created in 1976 to ensure that children in lower income areas could continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer months when school breakfast and lunches are not available. The program provides breakfast and lunch to children and teenagers, 18 years and younger, at approved sites. Persons over 18 years of age who have been determined mentally or physically handicapped and who participate in a public or private non-profit school program for the handicapped during the school year are eligible to receive meal benefits. Does your site qualify? To qualify for the program, a site must: Meet requirements for meal service preparation, distribution and accountability Have proper capacity and logistics for those enrolled Offer educational, cultural and/or recreational activities Provide supervision, meal service monitoring and training to site staff Maintain proper health and sanitary conditions Keep daily records and issue periodic reports At least 50% of the children who live in the area from which the site draws its attendance must be eligible for free or reduced price meals in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, or at least 50 % of the enrolled children at the site must have the same eligibility. Geographic eligibility is documented using school or census tract data. JCA SENIOR TECH JULY/AUGUST CLASSES The JCA SeniorTech Computer Training Centers, a service of the Jewish Council for the Aging, are gearing up for the July/August 2009 session. All JCA SeniorTech sites offer a range of courses from basic to advanced, using the Windows XP operating system, Microsoft Vista and high-Speed internet service. Courses are taught by volunteer instructors and coaches who are 50+, and most feature hands –on experience. Sites are located at the Asbury Methodist Village, BethesdaVital Living Center and Landmark Mall. All classes are opened to seniors 50+ and every student is afforded the opportunity to use the site for free practice weekly for one year after their first enrollment. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE COMMUNITY
LITERACY TUTORS NEEDED Can you help promote literacy in Montgomery County? Close to 125,000 residents, about 14% of the total population of Montgomery County cannot read, write, or speak English at a functional level. The Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) seeks volunteers to teach adults to read, write and speak English. LCMC offers two programs: (1) Basic Literacy, for adults who already speak English; (2) English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), which offers conversational help as well as reading and writing instruction. The number of students receiving our services is directly dependent on the number of volunteers willing to serve as tutors. Currently, over 200 adults are waiting for a tutor; most will wait 6-12 months to get one. Tutors provide free one-on-one or small group tutoring to adults who live or work in Montgomery County. No foreign language skills are necessary. Tutors complete an orientation session and a training workshop, where they learn a proven, easy-to-use teaching method. Orientations are scheduled for June 24, June 29, July 28, and August 5 in Rockville and Silver Spring. SECRET SHOPPER SERVICE QUALITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY REVIEW VOLUNTEERS NEEDED As part of Montgomery County Health and Human Services’ (HSS) quality improvement process we are seeking volunteers to act as “secret shoppers” to monitor the quality of service provided by our Information and Referral (I&R) units. We are looking for volunteers who are able and willing to pretend to be customers (using pre-identified scenario’s that allow us to evaluate whether staff provide appropriate answers), and then report back to us on their experience with the I&R units performance. The qualifications that we are looking for in volunteers for this program are: Ability to improvise from a prescribed scenario if asked for additional information (needs some level of ability to improvise), Willingness to rate staff performance and write down the exact nature of the referrals or information given, Willingness to make three calls during a one week period of time twice a year (to different I&R numbers within HHS each time), Participation in a 1 hour training about how to engage in the evaluation process (trainings will be available during both day time and evening). We are especially interested in volunteers who are able to make calls in language other than English to test whether our I&R units are able to serve residents who are non-English speaking. CHILDREN’S INN NEEDS BI-LINGUAL VOLUNTEERS The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health is a residential "place like home" for sick children and their families. Children come from across the country and around the world to stay together with their families in The Inn’s healing environment while receiving groundbreaking medical treatments at the NIH, the world’s leading biomedical research center. While the NIH takes care of the child’s medical needs, The Inn tends to the child’s heart, soul and spirit. Volunteers are needed to staff the welcome desk and assist with educational programming. Welcome Desk volunteers greet families as they arrive at The Inn and provide front-line customer service in person and by telephone. Educational Aides provide English tutoring to non-English speaking residents. Volunteers typically serve once a week or every other week. Welcome desk shifts include: Friday evenings 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Saturdays 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Educational Volunteer Aide schedules vary. Lead Teachers should have classroom teaching experience, experience teaching adults for whom English is a second language, enthusiasm for working with adult learners, and be available to teach eight 2-hour weekly classes.
