Grand Marshal Nominations Due Wednesday, April 15
Rockville, Md., March 5, 2009 - The City of Rockville is seeking a Grand Marshal for the 65th annual Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade. The Grand Marshal will serve as the official speaker during the ceremony on Monday, May 25, and participate in the parade immediately following the ceremony.
City of Rockville and Montgomery County residents, age 18 and older, who have formerly or currently serve in the United States military are eligible. In order to be considered, nominees must be well spoken and able to prepare and deliver a five-minute speech pertaining to their experiences in the armed forces.
"We're looking forward to including a Grand Marshal in the ceremonies for the first time ever this year," said Jen Betts, events specialist. "Our annual Memorial Day parade is one of the oldest in the region and we think this is a great way to express how proud Rockville is of its citizens who protect and defend our country."
Individuals may nominate themselves or other eligible residents. To enter, nominators must submit a completed entry form, a brief biography of the nominee and a uniformed picture of the nominee by Wednesday, April 15. There is no entry fee or a limit on the number of entries per person.
The City's Department of Recreation and Parks staff will jury the nominations and select the 2009 Grand Marshal. All nominees will be informed of the results by Wednesday, April 22.
The Grand Marshal will be required to arrive on Monday, May 25 in Rockville Town Center at 9 a.m. The Memorial Day Ceremony will take place from 9:30-10 a.m. Once the ceremony has concluded, the parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. The Grand Marshal's portion of the parade will end at approximately 11:30 a.m., however he/she and family are welcome to watch the remainder of the parade from the official reviewing stand.
The Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade is the capstone of the City's Hometown Holidays Celebration. Featuring a variety of musical guests, children's activities, an art festival and more, Hometown Holidays will be held May 23-25.
