See the 2009 Montgomery County Homicide Map

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division are investigating a homicide that occurred today at approximately 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot near the front entrance to the Peoples Community Baptist Church located at 31 Norwood Road in Silver Spring.

Three off-duty Montgomery County Police officers were working at the church when they heard the sound of shots and immediately called out. One of the officers quickly located the suspect who was armed with a handgun, and took him into custody. An adult female victim had been shot and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was initiated until Fire Rescue personnel arrived. Patricia Ann Simmons Kelly, age 52, of the 400 block of College Parkway in Rockville was transported to an area hospital for treatment. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Through the course of the investigation it was learned that the suspect, Kevin Kelly, age 52, of the same block address, was married to the victim, but had just recently been asked to leave their residence. He went to the church this morning to meet with her. It is believed that the shooting was the result of his anger that she was trying to establish an independent life without him.

Charges to include first-degree murder are pending.
