Gaithersburg Arts Barn Presents My Emperor’s New Clothes
Gaithersburg, MD. The Arts Barn, the City of Gaithersburg’s premiere cultural arts facility, presents a Sandy Spring Theatre Group production of My Emperor’s New Clothes by Larry Shue, running August 8 through 24, 2008. Shows will be held Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. at the Arts Barn,
311 Kent Square Road, Gaithersburg. Admission is $14, $12 for City of Gaithersburg residents.
In a twist on the classic Hans Christian Andersen story, My Emperor’s New Clothes is now set in the mythical kingdom of Mango-Chutney. The wise Emperor (wise because he has read the dictionary all the way through), holds a parade for which he must have the most beautiful clothes in the world. He offers half the state’s treasury to the weaver who comes up with the finest cloth, and the other half plus his daughter’s hand in marriage to anyone who can make him believe that something is real when it is not. After much furious activity and some diabolical plotting, the tale ends happily with the villains routed, the Princess united with her true love, and the Emperor saved by the cheerful vocal intercessions of the enthralled audience.
This show is suitable for all ages, the young and the young at heart.
