Pedestrian Injured in Hit and Run Collision in Wheaton

Officers from the Montgomery County Police 4th District Station are investigating a collision involving a pedestrian in Wheaton last night. At 8:45 pm on Saturday, January 5, 2008, a pedestrian was attempting to cross Veirs Mill Road at Ferrara Dr. There is a crosswalk at that location and Veirs Mill Road is separated by a grassy median. The pedestrian, (only identified as a Latino male in his early 20’s), was struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on Veirs Mill Road. The driver of the striking vehicle fled the scene towards Connecticut Ave. The striking vehicle is described as black SUV, possibly a GMC Yukon with a chrome grill or chrome brush guard, there is no description of the driver. The pedestrian was transported as a priority trauma to a local hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition. Identification of the pedestrian is pending notification of his family.
Investigators will determine the cause of the collision and any contributing circumstances, including illumination. It is unknown at this time if alcohol is a factor.
