Volunteers Sought for Rockville's Mentoring Program
Make a Difference as a Mentor
ROCKVILLE, Md., July 17, 2012 - For the 18th year, the City of Rockville is partnering with elementary schools to conduct a mentoring program. Adults and high school students are sought to work one-on-one with elementary school students and help them develop their academic and social skills.
Mentors can help the students with their homework, play games, teach life skills or just give the child someone with whom to talk.
"Mentoring provides a wonderful experience for the volunteers and students," said Cynthia Bangali. "Volunteers do not need any special skills; just a desire to listen and offer guidance, encouragement and friendship."
High school students can earn Student Service Learning credit hours for their participation. Mentors meet in a group setting with other mentors and mentees. Meetings occur at the child's school. Training and ongoing support for mentors is provided.
