Walt Whitman HS Production of
Frankenstein Wins Five Cappies Awards

The Walt Whitman High School production of Frankenstein received five awards from the Critics and Awards Program (Cappies) honoring high school actors, stage technicians, singers, dancers, musicians and theatre critics. The awards were presented on Sunday, June 10, at the 12th annual National Capital Area Cappies Awards Gala at the Kennedy Center.

The Whitman drama team received awards in the following categories:
  • Special Effects/Technology: Brian Clarkson
  • Lighting: Andrew Elman and Nikolas Allen
  • Sound: Lydia Carroll, Lindsay Worthington and Alex Allen
  • Set Design: Whitman Set Crew
  • Stage Crew: Whitman Stage Crew
Other MCPS high schools that participated in the Cappies program were: Albert Einstein (three nominations for The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Thomas S. Wootton (two nominations for The Wizard of Oz), Northwood (two nominations for Footloose), and Winston Churchill (seven nominations for Legally Blonde). Whitman received a total of 10 nominations.

More than 50 public and private high schools from the Washington metro region participate in this competition, which is judged by a panel of student critics. As part of the competition, high school theater and journalism students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, write reviews, and publish those reviews in local newspapers. At the end of the year, the student critics vote for awards that are presented at the Cappies Gala. The program, which began locally, has expanded to cities across the nation.
