Junior Achievement of
Greater Washington
People throughout Greater Washington are enjoying the summer with visits to local parks, travel on family vacations and swims at community pools.

At JA we ask, “who’s responsible for maintaining these grounds, roads and facilities?” As adults, we understand it’s the employees of local governments. But your child may not know this, so use it as a teachable moment.

Take a minute on these visits to explain how the experience is made possible. Describe that your family, your neighbors and others all share the cost through taxes. Explain that you pay these taxes as part of your monthly spending plan, a budget.

Kids learn best when having fun, so consider the happy times an opportunity to also develop fundamental life-skills.

As always, your support makes our work possible.

Thank you, enjoy the summer.

Senior representatives from the Maryland State Department of Education recently visited Junior Achievement Finance Park, the region’s largest experiential financial literacy learning center that teaches students about personal finances.

MSDE officials observed students from Prince George’s County Public Schools participating in a pilot day-long simulation. They noted the program’s ties to new state financial literacy curriculum standards, and discussed the potential for bringing the Finance Park program to Maryland.

Junior Achievement Quoted in
Washington Post Magazine

In the recent Washington Post Magazine feature on teaching teens about personal money management, JA’s President emphasized that spending habits start young, with trips to the mall, grocery store or local market.
