Leggett to Ring Opening Bell as Fenton Street Market Returns to Veterans Plaza

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will ring the opening bell as the Fenton Street Market (FSM) returns to Veterans Plaza on April 28. Leggett will make the market’s first purchase from Ryan Eicher, a young, local Silver Spring glass artist who got his start at FSM. Joining them will be Aminata Camara, a Silver Spring business woman who got her start at FSM last year and has created a business from her hobby of knitting.

Montgomery County’s strategy of using public space to support entrepreneurship led to over $1.4 million in sales for small businesses at FSM in 2011. Seventy-five thousand residents visited the market and the money earned by FSM vendors stays in the County to help create a vibrant, local economy. FSM vendors are a diverse group, coming from countries all over the world, including Ethiopia, Peru, India, Vietnam, Senegal, Mexico, Haiti and Turkey, with 70 percent of businesses female-owned.
