Pelican Kitchens

You've seen them at the market, you may even have one that lives in your car.  It's our Little Red Central Farm Market Bag which is given out each week free at The Pelican Kitchen and Bath Tent at Bethesda Central and Pike Central Farm Markets. There are so many of them traveling around now that we thought it would be fun this summer to see how just how creative you can be with your bag. We heard one was spotted in ROME recently!

Starting June 2nd 2012- September 3, 2012 take your red bag with you on vacations, to summer camp, on day trips, road trips, hiking trip, cruises and any other interesting places that you go this summer. Then send us a snapshot of your bag in that unique destination. For example, our bag boarded a skipjack in Cambridge, MD two weeks ago!

Get your friends and family to join in and to vote for your photograph. The photographs with the most votes will receive fabulous prizes. We have two divisions Kids 8-17 and Adults 18+. For contest information and to enter please click here.

DON"T HAVE  A BAG YET/ PICK ONE UP AT THE PELICAN KITCHEN AND BATH TENT SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS!

Central Farm Market Gets Social
Shopping

Farm markets offer more than the great products that are often new and different. They also allow us to extend our food experiences and grow our own sense of local identity. I know that the first time I ever saw a purple carrot was at a farm market. Being able to talk with the farmer that grew that purple carrot to learn how it was grown and how it was different from other orange carrots made the experience of buying it and tasting it all the more fun.

At our markets there is a lot of opportunity to walk around and learn and taste new foods and discover the new and often delightfully simple ways in which you can prepare them. At the market as we question, discuss and talk we are actually developing a more meaningful relationship with our food, our farmers, our neighbors and our families.

This is education as it should be-real time, hands on,  an all-sensory experience. Through hard work we have designed Central Farm Markets so that we create an upbeat environment that encourages vendor/customer/community conversation. As the seasons move through their natural stages, every week becomes a new experience. The dialogue with the farmer is often the most gratifying part of the shopping experience. Even the children love listening and learning. So this week, take time to seek out a new product and learn about it and become part of the social vitality and charm of the markets.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

It has been shown that shopping at farmers' markets involves up to 40 times more social interaction than shopping at an average big box grocery store.
