Central Farm Market Gets Social
Farm markets offer more than the great products that are often new and different. They also allow us to extend our food experiences and grow our own sense of local identity. I know that the first time I ever saw a purple carrot was at a farm market. Being able to talk with the farmer that grew that purple carrot to learn how it was grown and how it was different from other orange carrots made the experience of buying it and tasting it all the more fun.
At our markets there is a lot of opportunity to walk around and learn and taste new foods and discover the new and often delightfully simple ways in which you can prepare them. At the market as we question, discuss and talk we are actually developing a more meaningful relationship with our food, our farmers, our neighbors and our families.
This is education as it should be-real time, hands on, an all-sensory experience. Through hard work we have designed Central Farm Markets so that we create an upbeat environment that encourages vendor/customer/community conversation. As the seasons move through their natural stages, every week becomes a new experience. The dialogue with the farmer is often the most gratifying part of the shopping experience. Even the children love listening and learning. So this week, take time to seek out a new product and learn about it and become part of the social vitality and charm of the markets.
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
It has been shown that shopping at farmers' markets involves up to 40 times more social interaction than shopping at an average big box grocery store.
