Surviving the heat
In these dog days of summer, those who are most at risk from our high temperatures are young children, the elderly and people with health problems. Here are some common-sense measures to prevent heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses: - Stay indoors whenever possible. If you must do a strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, usually before 9 am.
- Wear protection from the sun: light-colored clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Never leave pets or young children in a car, even with the windows cracked.
If your home or that of someone you know isn't air conditioned, or you just want to get out, go to an air conditioned public facility or a pool. Or, of course, to the movies or a mall. To find air conditioned public facilities in your area, go to My Montgomery and type in your address. For questions about a specific facility and its hours of operation, call 311. |
Bells Mill Road to be resurfaced
Weather permitting, the micro-resurfacing of Bells Mill Road will begin Sunday night, July 22. The work will be done from 8 pm to 5 am and should take six to seven work days. After Bells Mill Road resurfacing is complete, the crew will start on Edson Lane, working the same nighttime hours.
As we wrote recently, work on Edson Lane was scheduled to begin on July 23. However, the project manager decided to complete Bells Mill Road first to be sure that it's resurfaced and restriped well before school is back in session.

| SHA public meeting on widening MD Rte. 355
On Tuesday, July 24, 6-8 pm, the State Highway Administration is holding an informational meeting on the BRAC project to widen northbound MD Rte. 355 (Rockville Pike) between Cedar Lane and Elsmere Avenue. As part of the project, contractors will construct retaining walls, a new sidewalk, and, depending on community input, a noise barrier along the affected part of MD Rte. 355.
Project-related displays showing the proposed improvements will be set up at the July 24 meeting. Attendees are encouraged to provide feedback, and SHA representatives will be there to answer questions. There will be no formal presentations, so those interested may come any time between 6 and 8 pm.
The meeting will be in the cafeteria of North Bethesda Middle School, 8935 Bradmoor Drive, Bethesda, MD 20817.
