It's vacation time for many, including the newsletter editor. This is our last issue until August 23.

White Flint streetscape spruce-up

novel program that began in mid-May to enhance and improve the White Flint area in advance of new development in the corridor is already producing noticeable results

A weekend maintenance team, made up of persons required to perform weekend community service, has been cleaning up streets and sidewalks in the greater White Flint area.

From 9 am to 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, a nine-person maintenance team completes tasks assigned by the

B-CC Regional Services Center. Tasks include routine maintenance, such as  weed control, sidewalk sweeping and litter collection. The team also has performed special clean-up projects, including filling thousands of bags with debris from the derecho storm.

The weekend maintenance program is a joint effort of the White Flint Ad Hoc Urban Services Committee, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center and the Montgomery County Department of Corrections. The maintenance team is directly supervised by Department of Corrections personnel and is outfitted with equipment and supplies by the regional services center.

Spanish-speaking election judges needed

The Montgomery County Board of Elections needs 12 individuals who are fluent in Spanish to serve as election judges at polling places on election day, Tuesday, November 6, 2012. These persons also be able to speak, read, and write English, be registered to vote in the State of Maryland, 18 years of age or older and US citizens. Montgomery County residency is not a pre-requisite to serve. All election judges are compensated for training and election day service.

Anyone interested in becoming an election judge should contact the Montgomery County Board of Elections at 240-777-8532, download an election judge questionnaire from www.777vote.org or e-mail Dr. Gilberto Zelaya.

Garrett Park Estates paving project

Work has begun on the Garrett Park paving project. It's expected to take three to four weeks.

As with other county paving projects in residential areas, there will be temporary lane closures and parking restrictions, but access to homes and continuous traffic will be maintained. Work hours are 7 am-5 pm, Monday through Friday.

For more information, contact project manager Donald Noble, 240-777-7601 or mcdot.highway@montgomerycountymd.gov

The county fair is coming

The Montgomery County agricultural fair, whose motto this year is  "Sew It, Grow It, Show It,"will be at the Gaithersburg fairgrounds August 10 - 18.

In addition to over 40 rides, there will be many attractions and contests for kids of all ages. Here are just a few:  lawn mower racing, pig, duck and goat races, a stilt walker, "magic" poodles, veggie and hermit crab races, arts, crafts and musical entertainment.

August events at Glen Echo Park

There are two more performances in Glen Echo's summer free concert series:  United States Navy Band Cruisers on August 9, and the Hot Society Orchestra of Washington on August 23, both at 7:30in the Bumper Car Pavilion. Of course, Glen Echo's August offerings don't stop there. Maybe the little people in your life would enjoy "If You Gave a Moose a Muffin" at Adventure Theater on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.
