Montgomery County Public School spring forums

Superintendent Joshua Starr is holding several forums this spring, each on a different important educational topic. The forums provide an opportunity for parents, staff and the community to hear about the latest trends and research, find out what's happening in our schools and share their thoughts with the superintendent, guest panelists and other participants. Each meeting includes a brief panel presentation, followed by small-group discussions.

The remaining forums are below:

Thursday, March 22, Col. Zadok Magruder High School: gifted education

Monday, April 16, Seneca Valley High School: special education

Thursday, May 10, Walt Whitman High School: social and emotional learning

All forums are 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Childcare and interpretation services are provided. For more information on the forums, visit the superintendent's spring forum website.

Primary election early voting

Primary election day in Maryland is April 3, but you can vote early and avoid the lines.

The Montgomery County Board of Elections will open five early-voting centers around the county from Saturday, March 24 until Thursday, March 29. Two of the centers are in Rockville; the others are in Germantown, Burtonsville and Silver Spring. The hours are 10 am-8 pm (except Sunday, March 25, noon-6 pm).

Registered voters also may vote by absentee ballot. The application deadline is Tuesday, March 27. Go to www.777vote.org to download an application or for more information.

On the ballot this year are candidates for president, the US Senate and House of Representatives, circuit court and court of appeals judges, delegates to the Democratic and Republican national committees  and members of the Montgomery County Board of Education.

Call the Montgomery County Board of Elections at 240-777-VOTE (8683) if you have questions.

Leadership Montgomery recruiting for 2013 program

Leadership Montgomery is a  20-year-old non-profit organization that motivates, educates and inspires individuals in leadership roles for the benefit of the community. It does this through a nine-month program of discussions on issues and resources, community dynamics and trends, best practices and more.

The organization is holding several free information sessions for its 2013 core, senior and youth programs. The next one is on Thursday, March 22, 3-4 pm, at the Vis Arts center in Rockville; another is on Wednesday, March 28, in Germantown, 8-9:30 pm. Attendees hear from Leadership Montgomery graduates  about the benefits of the program. Advance reservations are requested at least two days before an event.

Applications, session dates and other information are available on the organization's website.
