Pedestrian Safety Initiative
Gaithersburg, MD (March 20, 2012). The Gaithersburg Police Department is conducting an initiative to increase awareness of pedestrian safety through education efforts and enforcement efforts. The campaign is made possible through a grant received by the police department from the Maryland State Highway Administration.
The Gaithersburg Police Department will begin education and enforcement actions along Route 355 and Great Seneca Highway at Kentlands Boulevard in Gaithersburg, focusing on pedestrians not properly using crosswalks and drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians. The initiative will run from March 19th through April 14th. Drivers and pedestrians observed in violation may receive a citation or a preprinted warning.
Pedestrian safety remains a concern of the police, where citizens often cross against the pedestrian signal, putting themselves at risk of being struck by a vehicle.
