Notes from the Nutritionist

Did you know that rinsing canned beans before using them greatly reduces the amount of sodium? Keep this tip in mind when preparing healthy recipes like Winter Black Bean Soup.  Our clients loved this recipe and you will too!

Winter Black Bean SoupNotes from Nutrionist

Serves 4    Serving size: 1 1/4 cup  Cost per serving: $0.90

2 (15 ounce) cans reduced sodium black beans, rinsed

1/2 cup onion, chopped

1 tablespoon of chili powder

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 can (14.5 ounce) diced tomatoes

1 cup water

1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice (optional)

Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook. Stir until onions begin to soften, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add chili powder and cumin. Cook and stir for 1 minute. Add tomatoes, beans, and water. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes uncovered. Remove from heat and stir in lime or lemon juice if you like.

Volunteer Spotlight: November and December

SpotlightNovember and December are Manna's busiest months of the year.  The day before Thanksgiving we served 440 families! This is the highest number of families served in a single day in Manna's history.  We could not have kept up with the high demand without our devoted volunteers who helped us pack boxes, weigh donations, sort food, take referrals, distribute food to clients, and much more. Thank you to each and every one of you - groups and individuals - who helped ensure we served our neighbors in need with care and e fficiency during this demanding time. We could not have done it without you !Interested in volunteering? Email

Heartfelt Thank You to December 2011 Donors

We want to extend a warm and sincere THANK YOU to all of the organizations and businesses that have donated food and funds in the month of December 2011. Without your incredible generosity, we would not be able to feed the families in need in our community. We wish we could list each of the individuals who also contribute to Manna, but the list would be endless.  If we accidentally missed your business or organization in our list, contact; an unintentional oversight may have occurred during this busy time of year at Manna.
