Don't be a Turkey - Can the Grease
Can it, Cool it, Throw it Away!
Laurel, MD (November 23, 2010): A perfectly browned and roasted turkey is a thing of beauty, but the grease left behind…not so much. During the holidays and everyday, handle the grease with care.
Can it, Cool it, and Throw it Away… DO NOT dump it down the sink!
- Fats, oils and grease can clog sewer pipes, leading to basement back-ups and sewer overflows that can damage your home and the environment.
- Pour cooled grease into a can (a soup can works great) and throw it in the trash.
- Grease causes more than 40% of all sewer overflows.
When grease goes down the drain, it cools and accumulates on the sidewalls of the sewer pipes. Over time, this accumulation of grease restricts the flow and causes blockages in the sewer which may result in overflowing manholes or costly basement backups. Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) can discharge to storm drains and creeks causing a potential health and environmental hazard.
