LEGGETT TO HOST TOWN HALL MEETING IN TAKOMA PARK

 

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will host a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Takoma Park Middle School, 7611 Piney Branch Road, Silver Spring.  Previous town meetings have drawn thousands of residents who have taken advantage of the opportunity to voice their concerns to the County Executive. 12TH ANNUAL AMERICAN INDIAN FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN ROCKVILLE

 

The traditions, programs, color and pageantry of the American Indian will be highlighted at the 12th Annual American Indian Festival to be held on  November 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Executive Office Building (Terrace and Lobby Levels), 101 Monroe Street, Rockville. The free festival will feature entertainment, lectures, crafts, educational displays and native food for the entire family.  Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, Rockville Mayor Susan Hoffmann and other County officials will present proclamations recognizing November as American Indian Heritage month. The Ethnic Affairs Committee of Montgomery County expresses its sorrow and condolences to those individuals and families impacted by the attacks at Fort Hood. In spite of the fact that this horrible incident occurred in Texas, it is important to recognize how it can impact us right here in Montgomery County. We want to remind our community of the importance to not scapegoat or blame anyone or any group of based on their ethnicity, race and religion.   

 

This is a time for us to remain united and remember the strength of our community and nation rests on its diversity.

Montgomery College will host a free performance of "Into the Fire," a powerful theatrical documentary play about men and women soldiers returning home from serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam, on Monday, November 16, 2009, starting at 10 am.  The play takes a close look at the combat veterans' experiences with stress, trauma, disabilities and other challenges as they work to integrate back into families, the workforce, and the community. Montgomery College will host “Music of the Movement: A Sustaining Voice,” a special discussion about the music that shaped America’s civil rights movement, on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at 7:30 pm at Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Performing Arts Center. Free and open to the public, this event will feature civil rights leader and Georgia Congressman John H. Lewis, singer/composer and cultural historian Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, ethnomusicologist Dr. Portia Maultsby, and “The Hip Hop Wars” author Dr. Tricia Rose in a roundtable discussion about the music of the civil rights movement. INFORMED PARENTS-SUCCESSFUL CHILDREN: EARLY EDUCATION AT ITS BEST

 

The mission of Informed Parents-Successful Children (IPSC) is to provide non-English speaking parents and caregivers with tools to promote early childhood development and school readiness. IPSC was specifically designed to work in close collaboration with organizations serving the growing linguistically and culturally diverse populations in the state of Maryland.  During the past two years IPSC has conducted a total of 38 training sessions for organizations serving linguistically diverse parents, family day care providers and parents. The training sessions have reached a total of 640 participants.

LEGGETT HAILS COUNTY TRIPLE-A BOND RATING IN TROUBLED ECONOMIC TIMES

WATERSHED RESTORATION IMPLEMENTATION PLANS TO MEET THE MS4 PERMIT REQUIREMENTS

 

On Wednesday, November 18, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will host a public informational meeting on the development of Watershed Restoration Implementation Plans to meet its stormwater permit requirements.  The meeting will take place from 7 to 9 pm in the Council Office Building, 100 Maryland Avenue, Seventh Floor, Rockville. 
 
The purpose of this meeting is to provide background on the Permit requirements, present the framework which will be used for developing the watershed-specific implementation plans, and receive input from the general public on the proposed approach. MONTGOMERY COUNTY SPENDING MEETING

 

Maryland Department of Transportation and Montgomery County officials will meet next week to discuss a six-year plan for transportation spending that will be presented to the legislature in January.  Transportation Secretary Beverley K. Swaim-Staley and State Highway Administrator Neil J. Pedersen will lead a delegation of state officials to meet with county officials and members of the public. The meeting will be at 7 pm, Nov. 12 in the County Council's office, 100 Maryland Ave., Rockville.

 

UPDATE ON TOWN SQUARE PARKING

 

On October 26, the Mayor and Council considered proposals for free garage parking during the December holiday season. They directed staff to implement free parking in the Town Square garages all days and hours from December 14, 2009 to January 3, 2010. Parking meter users will continue to be charged throughout that period.

COMMUTER CONNECTIONS TESTS POOL REWARDS TO MOVE COMMUTERS INTO CARPOOLS

MAJOR SMARTBENEFITS® CHANGES TO BEGIN JANUARY 1

 

Beginning January 1, 2010, Metro’s SmartBenefits® program will change and enable employers to comply with a new federal mandate that requires transit benefits to be disbursed and monitored separately from other value stored in their employees’ SmarTrip® cards. STATE TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS AFFIRM PLANNERS’ RECOMMENDATION FOR CORRIDOR CITIES TRANSITWAY ROUTE

COMPUTER SAVVY SENIOR VOLUNTEERS WANTED

 

The JCA (Jewish Council for the Aging) has JCA Senior Tech Centers teaching seniors 50+ the use of the computer.  Senior volunteers are needed to teach, coach and assist at all of our centers.  If you enjoy computers and want to sharpen your skills and meet other “senior computer whiz kids,” this is the place for you. The classes taught include: basic introduction, word-processing, graphics, desktop publicizing, photography, internet, e-mail, and much more.

TEACH THE PARENT, REACH THE CHILD

 

Rockville, MD – English for Daily Living, a classroom program for parents of children in the Montgomery County Public Schools, is seeking volunteer teachers and assistant teachers for spring classes. Classes are held on weekdays, usually in the evenings, at schools in Silver Spring and Gaithersburg.

Lead Teachers should have classroom teaching experience, experience teaching adults for whom English is a second language, enthusiasm for working with adult learners, and be available to teach eight 2-hour weekly classes.

Assistant Teachers should have an interest in working with adults for whom English is a second language and be available to assist during eight 2-hour weekly classes.

In 1-2 hours/week, you can make a real difference in the life of a student. Volunteers work in a group setting, matched with an individual child, to provide friendship, encouragement, and help with reading, language, geography skills, and cultural activities.
