Construction Volunteer Update

Phew!  You guys have been doing a great job on the construction site.  If you want to sign up for a build day, now is your chance, but hurry because space is limited.
Here are a few important things for you to know before you go onsite.
  1. We're doing a lot of demo work and we need everyone to wear long pants or jeans in addition to closed toed shoes.
  2. Drink some water and then drink even more water!  It's hot and humid out there and we need you to healthy.
  3. Have fun!  I know I don't need to tell most of you this, but it's always good to remind people that even though we work you hard, we hope you're also having a good time!
  4. You can view all of our construction FAQS here.

12 Homes!
HfH-MC is happy to announce that the County has agreed to allow us to purchase at least two additional homes this year.  That brings us to a total of 12 homes that we can renovate and rehab for our families.  This all means that we'll be able to approve two more families than we initially thought and also have many more onsite build days.  HfH-MC is very thankful to our partners at the Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs to make these additional homes possible.

HfH-MC Family Selection
We have SIX families selected for our current rehab and renovation project.  That means we have six more to go!  Many of the first six families have already spent some time on the construction site to start working on their sweat equity requirement.  We hope you all have the chance to meet our new homeowners soon.

What are you doing this Saturday?
ReStore is going back to its roots and we want to involve more volunteers. We have openings for volunteer cashiers, customer service associates, volunteer leaders and truck driver assistants to help one Saturday (or more) of every month. Saturdays are busy, challenging and very fun! The store is packed with friendly customers and there is ample opportunity to interact with other volunteers. So if you're in the mood to give back and are looking for a social, upbeat environment, join the ReStore team today!  Interested volunteers should contact Adeela Abbasi at 301-990-0014 x 16 or adeela.abbasi@habitat-mc.org.

If Saturdays don't work for you, call us anyway!
We will find something to fulfill your needs and ours.

Habitat and Extreme Home Makeover

Join us on July 11th, 2009 as Classic Homes of Maryland celebrates the one-year anniversary of their 4-day build with the ABC TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" by hosting a fundraiser benefiting HfH-MC. The event will be held at the Jackson Family's "Extreme Makeover" home in Poolesville.

This is an a great opportunity for Classic Homes and Habitat to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness and the struggles of low-income families, like the Jackson family of 15.

The fundraiser will be held from 12-5pm on July 11. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the Jacksons, the builders of the home, and the trades who donated their time and resources to complete this home. Entry for attendees is $5. With admission the attendees will receive a free T-shirt, DVD copy of the Extreme Makeover show, a personalized tour of the inside of the home, and access to all of the activities, such as a moon bounce and musical performances.  Please click here to RSVP.

Volunteer With Us at the Event
HfH-MC needs 15-20 volunteers to help with sign-in, provide guided tours of the home and serve as greeters.  Volunteers will be able to enter the event free of charge.  Please click here to sign up.  For more information, please contact Shana Newman via email  at shana.newman@habitat-mc.org or by phone (301) 990-0014 x 17.

 Volunteer Needs

HfH-MC Family Partners Needed
We didn't hear from many of you last month about joining our family partner program.  Please consider whether or not this might be a volunteer opportunity you are interested in.

Now that we have some families selected, we will start to rely more heavily upon our Family Partners.  This is an extremely dedicated group of volunteers who partner with our families as soon as they are selected to offer support throughout the Habitat home buying process.  We are in need of additional family partners.  No special skills are required other than the ability and interest to offer support and understanding.  If you have some time to spare, at least five hours per month, and would love to foster a friendship with our new home buyers, please contact Molly Martin Pelzer via molly.martin@habitat-mc.org or (301) 990-0014 x 18.

Join our Faith Outreach Committee
The Faith Outreach Committee works to build and strengthen the relationship between Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, Maryland and the local faith community (in support of affordable housing). The committee will work to engage faith groups to provide financial resources, participate in construction and non-construction volunteer work, offer prayer as well as support to Habitat homeowners and their families.  For more information, please click here.

If interested, please contact Shana Newman Fajarado at 301-990-0014 x 17 or shana.newman@habitat-mc.org for additional information and details regarding this exciting opportunity.

Do you like to talk?  Do you like to talk about Habitat?
If yes, then consider joining HfH-MC's Ambassador Speakers Bureau (HASB).  As a member you would attend one to two events per month and represent HfH-MC at community events.  We gladly offer training and will make sure you know all you can about HfH-MC and Habitat.  This is a great opportunity for someone who would like to make a meaningful yet flexible volunteer commitment to HfH-MC.

If interested, please contact Martiel Beatty at 301-990-0014 x 25 or martiel.beatty@habitat-mc.org for additional information and details regarding this exciting opportunity.

Do You Have an Extra Camera?

camera cartoonYou all are so photogenic when you're onsite that we LOVE to take pictures of you.  Lately it's been a bit hard to do because our camera has gone missing.  The HfH-MC Construction Camera has apparently grown legs and walked away from our safekeeping.

If anyone has an extra camera we would be eternally grateful to hear from you.  Our only requirement is that it is a digital point and shoot camera because while I enjoy the analog SLRs, we'll get more usable photos posted sooner if we don't have to worry too much about composition!

If you can help us out, please contact Molly Martin Pelzer at molly.martin@habitat-mc.org or (301) 990-0014 x 18.

Volunteer Tips!

If you like volunteering with Habitat and you have an interest in travel, you might want to check out Habitat for Humanity International's Global Village Build program.  Build trips occur all over the world, including the US and Canada.  Maybe this is your excuse to spend a few weeks in Hawaii or take that dream trip to Papua New Guinea while also doing some good.

Many international affiliates depend entirely on global village trips and tithing from domestic affiliates for financial support.  HfH-MC tithes 10% of all monies to Habitat Portugal to support their programs.  Next time you donate to HfH-MC know that your dollars reach across the Atlantic Ocean to help families find simple, decent, affordable housing in Portugal.  Consider making an even larger impact by participating in a Global Village trip to Portugal!
