Olney Single Vehicle Collision Results in Three Deaths

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a single-vehicle fatal collision that occurred today at approximately 3:11 a.m. in the 4700 block of Olney Laytonsville Road at Volunteer Drive. Three of the five vehicle occupants are deceased.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a silver, 2007, Toyota Corolla was traveling east on Olney Laytonsville Road. For reasons still under investigation, the Corolla left the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene before police arrival but was apprehended by police approximately three hours after the collision. The occupants of the vehicle have been identified as:

• Driver, Kevin Coffay, age 20, of the 16700 block of Cutlass Drive in Rockville, transported to an area hospital after apprehension with minor injuries.
  
  
• Right front passenger, Spencer Datt, age 18, of the 5700 block of Sunrise Hill Road in Derwood, pronounced deceased on scene.
  
  
• Left rear passenger, Charles Anthony Nardella, age 19, of the 7700 block of Shady Brook Lane in Gaithersburg, transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
  
  
• Right rear passenger, Haeley N. McGuire, age 18, of the 5600 block of Artesian Drive in Rockville, transported to MedStar where she was pronounced deceased.

• Center rear passenger, John Hoover, age 20, of the 5800 block of Rolling Drive in Rockville, transported to Montgomery General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Driver Charged in Olney Triple Fatal Collision

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) continue to investigate a single-vehicle fatal collision that occurred today at approximately 3:11 a.m. in the 4700 block of Olney Laytonsville Road at Volunteer Drive. Three of the five vehicle occupants are deceased.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal collision, identified as Kevin Coffay, age 20, of the 16700 block of Cutlass Drive in Rockville, fled the collision scene before the arrival of officers. After an approximately three hour search utilizing police K-9 units and officers, Coffay was located outside of his residence by police; Coffay was apprehended and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Following his discharge from the hospital, Coffay was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Center and charged by the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) with the following traffic offenses:

• Failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury
• Failure to immediately stop vehicle at scene of accident involving death
• Failure of driver involved in accident to render reasonable assistance to injured person
• Failure of vehicle driver in accident to report (bodily injury, death, attended vehicle damage, property damage) to nearest police
• Attempt by driver to elude uniformed police by fleeing on foot

At the time of this press release, Kevin Coffay is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center on $500,000 bond. Coffay’s bond hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, May 16, 2011, at the Rockville District Courthouse at 1:00 p.m.

Additional criminal and traffic charges may be placed against Coffay when the collision investigation is completed by the Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU).

Driver in Fatal Collision Posts Bond

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) continue to investigate a single-vehicle fatal collision that occurred on May 15, 2011, at approximately 3:11 a.m. in the 4700 block of Olney Laytonsville Road at Volunteer Drive. Three of the five vehicle occupants are deceased.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal collision, identified as Kevin Coffay, age 20, of the 16700 block of Cutlass Drive in Rockville, was charged by the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) with five traffic offenses and was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Center where he was held on $500,000 bond. On May 17, 2011, Kevin Coffay posted bond. Coffay’s next court hearing is scheduled for July 12, 2011, at the Rockville District Courthouse at 1:30 p.m.
