MDA Reports Weights and Measures Law Violations

ANNAPOLIS, MD (Feb. 4, 2009) The Maryland Department of Agrriculture (MDA) Weights and Measures Section reported the following enforcement activity between September 16, 2008, and January 20, 2009.

Montgomery County Stores Cited
  • Selectos Latinos, Rockville - On October 10, 2008 MDA received $500 for a civil penalty assessed for short weight (first civil penalty).

  • Giant Food #198, Potomac - On October 16, 2008 MDA received $750 forr a civil penalty assessed for short weight (first civil penalty).

  • Bloom #2708, Rockville - On October 30, 2008 MDA received $1,000 forr a civil penalty assessed for short weight (third civil penalty).

  • Super Fresh #943, Silver Spring - On November 6, 2008 MDA received $$750 for a civil penalty assessed for short weight (first civil penalty).

  • Rockwall Cafe, Rockville - On November 13, 2008 MDA received $2250 for a civil penalty assessed to for short weight (first civil penalty).

  • Shalom Strictly Kosher, Inc., Wheaton - On December 3, 2008 MDA reeceived $250 for a civil penalty assessed for short weight (first civil penalty).

  • Giant Food #329, Rockville - On December 15, 2008 MDA received $750 for a civil penalty assessed for short weight (first civil penalty).

  • Han Ah Reum, Wheaton - On January 13, 2009 MDA received $1,000 for a civil penalty assessed for short weight (second civil penalty).
Maryland weights and measures officials inspect and regulate devices used in determining the quantity of commodities as diverse as fuel oil, food products, livestock, grain, and precious metals. In Fiscal Year 2007, field staff conducted nearly 50,000 inspections of commercial weighing and measuring devices, inspected and tested nearly 12,000 individual lots of prepackaged commodities (representing approximately 126,000 packages) offered for sale, and investigated more than 500 consumer complaints.
