Bilingual, Republican, and Unaffiliated Election Judges Needed for 2010 Elections

Montgomery County’s Board of Elections is seeking individuals to serve as election judges at polling places for the Gubernatorial Elections to be held on September 14, and November 2, 2010.

In accordance with the Election Code, judges must be registered to vote in the State of Maryland.  They must also be able to speak, read, and write the English language, and while acting as a judge must not hold, or be a candidate for, public or party office.  In addition, election judges may not serve as a campaign manager for a candidate or as treasurer for any campaign financial entity.

Specifically, voters registered as either Republican or Unaffiliated, and those voters bilingual in Spanish are needed throughout the county; we do not have a current need for Democratic affiliated voters as all positions have been filled.  Training will be provided and all judges will be compensated for Election Day.

Help Needed for Storm Victims in Gaithersburg

The intense thunderstorm that tore through the City of Gaithersburg on August 12, 2010 uprooted a large tree that crashed through the stairwell of the multi-level Flowers Apartments at 511 South Frederick Avenue. One of the two apartment buildings in the complex will be uninhabitable for months. The second building is currently without utility services and cannot be occupied until utilities are restored.

Through August 16, the landlord and the Red Cross have provided immediate shelter at a local hotel to the 39 residents of the 14 units affected by the catastrophic damage. The City of Gaithersburg has agreed to secure payment to the hotel for the continued stay of the residents until alternate living arrangements can be made. In addition to paying for the hotel, resources are also needed to provide moving services (both trucks and manpower), temporary storage, clothing, furniture, and other household items.

Nonprofit organizations, businesses and faith-based organizations are being asked for assistance to help offset these expenses through collections and volunteer outreach. Monetary contributions and in-kind donations and services would be greatly appreciated. Donations are tax deductible.

This effort is being coordinated by the City of Gaithersburg Community Services Division. Montgomery County’s Fall Guide for Recreation and Park Programs Now Available

 Montgomery County’s Department of Recreation will begin accepting registrations for its fall programs and classes on Monday, August 16. Registration for swim lessons opens on August 18.

The Fall Guide is full of hundreds of exciting classes and programs, including scuba diving, water aerobics, pottery, ballroom dancing, cooking and Zumba classes.

Copies of the Fall Guide are available at public libraries, as well as community, recreation, aquatic and senior centers around the County. There is also information on registering for events in the 2010 Maryland Senior Olympics, taking place during September and October.

Maryland CASH Campaign Kicks Off in Montgomery County

The Maryland CASH (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) Campaign is a statewide non-profit that assists low- and moderate- income working families by offering financial education and asset building programs. The Maryland CASH Academy provides free and low cost financial education classes through partnerships with service providers such as non-profits, banks, credit unions, educational institutions, and other financial professionals. Courses include Wise Use of Credit, Understanding Bankruptcy, Building a Basic Budget, Understanding Your Taxes, and ID Theft.

County’s Office of Human Rights Seeks Nominations for Hall of Fame

The Montgomery County Office of Human Rights (OHR) is currently accepting nominations for its Sixth Hall of Fame.  Nominees should be individuals – either living or deceased – who have made contributions to human and civil rights in the county.  The deadline for nominations is September 3.

Five nominees will be selected for the Hall of Fame by a panel of community judges.  The induction ceremony is planned for Sunday, October 24, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Black Rock Center for the Arts in Germantown.

The OHR Hall of Fame began in 2001 and is held every other year.  More than 65 individuals have been inducted over the years.  For a complete listing of inductees, go to www.montgomerycountymd.gov/humanrights. Five Ways to Ensure Your Voting Rights

Montgomery County Election Director, Margaret Jurgensen, encourages registered voters to vote and offers assurances that voters’ rights will be protected.  To help make the voting process smoother, whether you chose to vote during Early Voting (September 3 – September 9) or on Election Day (September 14), Jurgensen suggests that voters follow instructions and allow enough time to cast a ballot, especially during the peak voting hours immediately before and after the workday. 

Jurgensen offers these Election Day reminders:

1.      BE ON TIME – Polling hours for all Early Voting Centers are 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Polling hours for all Election Day precincts are 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

2.      IF VOTING ON ELECTION DAY, VOTE IN THE CORRECT PRECINCT – It is important for voters to go to the polling site for the precinct in which they are registered to vote.  The correct polling location is listed above the mailing address on the sample ballot or you may contact the Montgomery County Board of Elections office at 240-777-VOTE or visit www.777vote.org or www.montgomerycountymd.gov/elections (select Polling Place Locator).

3.      IF YOU CHOOSE TO VOTE DURING THE EARLY VOTING PERIOD, CHECK THE WAIT TIME PRIOR TO LEAVING YOUR HOME OR OFFICE – Voters in Montgomery County may quickly check the wait time at each of the five Early Voting Centers by visiting our website – www.777vote.org and viewing the Wait Time Dashboard scrolling display.

4.      ID MAY BE REQUIRED – First-time voters in Montgomery County may be required to show proper identification.  A driver’s license or official document including the voter’s name and address are acceptable.  It is also helpful to bring voter registration cards, however, it is not required to vote.

5.      FILL OUT SAMPLE BALLOT AND TAKE TO THE POLLING PLACE – Sample ballots contain important information on which candidates will appear on a ballot, how to operate the voting machines, and where voters are assigned to vote.  Voters should read it carefully, make selections, and take it to the polling place to use as a guide – the voting process will be easier as a result.

Voters should not hesitate to ask for assistance.  Election officials are trained to assist voters with physical disabilities and answer questions about the voting process.  The ballot is available in both English and Spanish.  Voters for whom English is a second language are encouraged to bring an interpreter to the polling place to help them with the voting process.  In addition, if a mistake is made on a ballot, the voter should notify the election official immediately and corrective measures will be taken.

AVOID LINES ON ELECTION DAY – VOTE EARLY

For the first time the State of Maryland is implementing Early Voting for the Gubernatorial Primary Election.  Montgomery County will open 5 Early Voting Centers from September 3 – 9, excluding Sunday, from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.  Voters are able to vote on the same voting equipment used on Election Day, but at a time that is more convenient.

PRIMARY ELECTION BALLOT AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW

Pursuant to Article 33, Section 9-207 (d), Annotated Code of Maryland, the ballot must be publicly displayed on all days that the office is open through the day of election.  The form and arrangement of the ballot for the Montgomery County 2010 Gubernatorial Primary Election is now available for review at the Montgomery County Board of Elections, 18753 N. Frederick Avenue, Suite 210, in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  Directions to the facility may be found on our website – www.777vote.org – by selecting the address at the top of the home page.

The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Questions regarding the ballot arrangement may be directed to Christine Rzeszut at 240-777-8585 or via e-mail at nancy.rzeszut@montgomerycountymd.gov.

ABSENTEE BALLOT APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE

Voters who are unable to cast their ballot for the Gubernatorial Primary Election on Election Day (September 14) or during Early Voting (September 3 – 9), may now request an application to vote by absentee ballot.

To obtain the application electronically visit our website – www.777vote.org – and select Absentee Voting.  Follow the instructions for completing the application which may be mailed or, if already a registered voter, faxed (240-777-8560) or e-mailed (absentee@montgomerycountymd.gov) to the Board of Elections.  To obtain an application for another person, please call 240-777-8553 for detailed information.

The deadline for receipt of your completed application for an absentee ballot by mail is September 7 at 4:30 p.m., or 11:59 p.m. if requesting via fax or e-mail.  After that date, absentee ballot applications may be requested in person at our office – 18753 N. Frederick Avenue, Suite 210, in Gaithersburg.  The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to

5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday, August 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays September 4 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

ALTERNATE POLLING PLACES AVAILABLE

Voters may request a change in polling place for two reasons – accessibility concerns or religious principles.

Accessibility Concerns:  For the 2010 Gubernatorial Elections, all Montgomery County polling places are compliant with Maryland State Board of Elections accessibility guidelines.

Religious Principles:  If you are assigned a polling place located in a religious institution, and entering that site conflicts with your religious beliefs and practices, you may request to be relocated to a nearby polling place.  You may obtain a reassignment request form from the Maryland State Board of Elections’ web site at http://www.elections.state.md.us/pdf...ling_Place.pdf, by calling Christine Rzeszut at 240-777-8585, or by e-mail at nancy.rzeszut@montgomerycountymd.gov.  The request must be received by 9 p.m. August 24 for the Primary Election.

If a satisfactory substitute polling place is not available voting at an Early Voting Center or by absentee ballot are alternatives.  Early Voting will be held from September 3 through 9, excluding Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at five Montgomery County locations.  For information on specific locations please visit our website at www.777vote.org.  Applications for absentee ballots to be mailed must be submitted to the Board of Elections by 8 p.m., September 7.  For information on absentee voting, call 240-777-8550, or e-mail, absentee@montgomerycountymd.gov.

FY2012 CDBG/ESG applications being accepted NOW

Grants of up to $45,000 are available for non-profits that provide programs/services benefiting lower-income residents of Montgomery County.  Funding is provided through the Community Development Block Grant/Emergency Shelter Grant programs and is awarded through fee-for-services contracts with the county.  Applications for FY2012 funds are due at 4:00pm on September 24th.  Total funding is not expected to exceed $600,000, and requests always exceed the amount of funding available.  Successful applicants could expect to receive funds in the fall of 2011. Montgomery County Humane Society Seeks New Members for Board of Directors

The Montgomery County Humane Society (MCHS), a nonprofit, 501(c) (3) organization, seeks energetic individuals from diverse professional backgrounds to serve on its Board of Directors for the 2011-2013 term.  MCHS strives to create a community that supports animals and their value to human wellbeing, addresses animal mistreatment and overpopulation, and reduces reliance on institutional sheltering through responsible alternatives. MCHS handles more than 9,000 animals annually, and has served Montgomery County since 1958. To provide direct coordination and planning of a wide range of programs that help foreign-born residents integrate to Montgomery County life and get on the path to citizenship. Responsibilities include but not limited to: program planning and coordination, recruiting prospective volunteer instructors and instructor aides, coordinating logistics and supervising instructors at all sites of the Gilchrist Center. Community Service Day: Saturday, October 23, 2010

Plan projects now for Montgomery County's Community Service Day: Saturday, October 23, 2010. Hosting a project for groups, small or large, is an excellent opportunity to get needed work done, and to let the community know who you are and what you do all year long. It is also a great way for you to establish new relationships with volunteers and businesses. 

Publicity about Community Service Day is beginning now.  We want you to be ready to take advantage of individuals and groups from around the county who will be looking for meaningful volunteer opportunities on this weekend of service. Saturday and Sunday projects are needed. If you are planning weekday projects, plan them for the week before and we'll publicize those along with the weekend requests.  

Once you have identified your project for the weekend of October 23^rd, enter it into the Volunteer Center's online database. Log-in to your account and create a new "Opportunity".  (If your project will be taking place outdoors, please note a rain plan in the description field.) Please contact us if you need help with the database.  

As a special incentive, those agencies who register projects by September 15^th will be featured in a Gazette ad in early October.

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Washington is the non-profit public affairs and community relations arm of the regional Jewish community representing 210 Jewish organizations and synagogues and the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. The JCRC focuses on government relations, Israel advocacy, inter-group relations, and social justice.

The Executive Director, as the agency’s Chief Executive Officer, is responsible for leading and managing our dynamic, accomplished, fast paced organization. The Executive Assistant is the Director’s “right hand” responsible for managing the flow of work and communication from the Director’s office. Maryland CASH Campaign Kicks Off in Montgomery County

The Maryland CASH (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) Campaign is a statewide non-profit that assists low- and moderate- income working families by offering financial education and asset building programs. The Maryland CASH Academy provides free and low cost financial education classes through partnerships with service providers such as non-profits, banks, credit unions, educational institutions, and other financial professionals. Courses include Wise Use of Credit, Understanding Bankruptcy, Building a Basic Budget, Understanding Your Taxes, and ID Theft.

Bilingual, Republican, and Unaffiliated Election Judges Needed for 2010 Elections

Montgomery County’s Board of Elections is seeking individuals to serve as election judges at polling places for the Gubernatorial Elections to be held on September 14, and November 2, 2010.

In accordance with the Election Code, judges must be registered to vote in the State of Maryland.  They must also be able to speak, read, and write the English language, and while acting as a judge must not hold, or be a candidate for, public or party office.  In addition, election judges may not serve as a campaign manager for a candidate or as treasurer for any campaign financial entity.

Specifically, voters registered as either Republican or Unaffiliated, and those voters bilingual in Spanish are needed throughout the county; we do not have a current need for Democratic affiliated voters as all positions have been filled.  Training will be provided and all judges will be compensated for Election Day.

ESOL Classes Offered in Eastern County

The Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, in conjunction with the Literacy Council of Montgomery County, will host free ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes for adults beginning Monday, August 23 at the center located at 3300 Briggs Chaney Road in Silver Spring.

Participants are required to attend either one of the two orientation sessions that will be held on Monday, August 9 and Tuesday, August 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. Students will be admitted to the orientation on a first-come, first-served basis.

Newest “Consumer Compass” Cable TV Show on Air

The newest episode of Montgomery County’s cable TV show, “Consumer Compass” is now on the air and features an interview with NBC-TV 4 consumer reporter, Liz Crenshaw.  Other segments include warnings about selling jewelry and coins at “gold parties,” and tips about mail order “gold for cash” businesses; information about pawn shops; and what happens when items are left at a business that is being evicted, and how the Business Eviction Response Team helps consumers reclaim their possessions. “The lively and engaging format of this show enhances our outreach efforts,” said Office of Consumer Protection Director and show host Eric Friedman.  “Consumers want to know about the latest scams and appreciate learning about the most recent laws and about the services we provide.”

6 Montgomery County Libraries Begin Year-Round Sunday Service

Beginning August 15, the following Montgomery County public libraries will be open on Sundays year-round -- except on certain major holiday weekends -- from 1 to 5 p.m.:  Bethesda, Germantown, Marilyn J. County’s Office of Human Rights Seeks Nominations for Hall of Fame

The Montgomery County Office of Human Rights (OHR) is currently accepting nominations for its Sixth Hall of Fame.  Nominees should be individuals – either living or deceased – who have made contributions to human and civil rights in the county.  The deadline for nominations is September 3.

Five nominees will be selected for the Hall of Fame by a panel of community judges.  The induction ceremony is planned for Sunday, October 24, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Black Rock Center for the Arts in Germantown.

The OHR Hall of Fame began in 2001 and is held every other year.  More than 65 individuals have been inducted over the years.  For a complete listing of inductees, go to www.montgomerycountymd.gov/humanrights. AVOID LINES ON ELECTION DAY – VOTE EARLY

For the first time the State of Maryland is implementing Early Voting for the Gubernatorial Primary Election.  Montgomery County will open 5 Early Voting Centers from September 3 – 9, excluding Sunday, from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.  Voters are able to vote on the same voting equipment used on Election Day, but at a time that is more convenient.

Pursuant to Article 33, Section 9-207 (d), Annotated Code of Maryland, the ballot must be publicly displayed on all days that the office is open through the day of election.  The form and arrangement of the ballot for the Montgomery County 2010 Gubernatorial Primary Election is now available for review at the Montgomery County Board of Elections, 18753 N. Frederick Avenue, Suite 210, in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  Directions to the facility may be found on our website – www.777vote.org – by selecting the address at the top of the home page.

The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Questions regarding the ballot arrangement may be directed to Christine Rzeszut at 240-777-8585 or via e-mail at nancy.rzeszut@montgomerycountymd.gov.

ABSENTEE BALLOT APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE

Voters who are unable to cast their ballot for the Gubernatorial Primary Election on Election Day (September 14) or during Early Voting (September 3 – 9), may now request an application to vote by absentee ballot.

To obtain the application electronically visit our website – www.777vote.org – and select Absentee Voting.  Follow the instructions for completing the application which may be mailed or, if already a registered voter, faxed (240-777-8560) or e-mailed (absentee@montgomerycountymd.gov) to the Board of Elections.  To obtain an application for another person, please call 240-777-8553 for detailed information.

The deadline for receipt of your completed application for an absentee ballot by mail is September 7 at 4:30 p.m., or 11:59 p.m. if requesting via fax or e-mail.  After that date, absentee ballot applications may be requested in person at our office – 18753 N. Frederick Avenue, Suite 210, in Gaithersburg.  The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to

5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday, August 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays September 4 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

ALTERNATE POLLING PLACES AVAILABLE

Voters may request a change in polling place for two reasons – accessibility concerns or religious principles.

Accessibility Concerns:  For the 2010 Gubernatorial Elections, all Montgomery County polling places are compliant with Maryland State Board of Elections accessibility guidelines.

Religious Principles:  If you are assigned a polling place located in a religious institution, and entering that site conflicts with your religious beliefs and practices, you may request to be relocated to a nearby polling place.  You may obtain a reassignment request form from the Maryland State Board of Elections’ web site at http://www.elections.state.md.us/pdf...ling_Place.pdf, by calling Christine Rzeszut at 240-777-8585, or by e-mail at nancy.rzeszut@montgomerycountymd.gov.  The request must be received by 9 p.m. August 24 for the Primary Election.

If a satisfactory substitute polling place is not available voting at an Early Voting Center or by absentee ballot are alternatives.  Early Voting will be held from September 3 through 9, excluding Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at five Montgomery County locations.  For information on specific locations please visit our website at www.777vote.org.  Applications for absentee ballots to be mailed must be submitted to the Board of Elections by 8 p.m., September 7.  For information on absentee voting, call 240-777-8550, or e-mail, absentee@montgomerycountymd.gov.

Leadership Montgomery Accepting Project Proposals

Leadership Montgomery (LM) is a nonprofit community leadership program designed to identify, educate and motivate current and emerging leaders in our community to effectively address the present and future challenges of Montgomery County.
 
Each year, as part of the LM Core Class program, participants are required to work on Community Impact Projects.  LM invites you, your organization, and/or an organization you know to submit a proposal for a community impact project for the Core and Senior Classes of 2011.
 
Projects must have a tangible end product of lasting benefit to the participating organization and to the community. They should be able to be completed between November and May and must not involve fundraising.  For a description of some previous projects, click here.
 
For nonprofit organizations and community groups, this invitation to submit a project proposal presents an opportunity to use the services of a talented team (seven to eight individuals) of professionals. The team can help you with a project you have had in mind, but lacked the human resources to accomplish.  At the same time, you can expose a group of established and emerging leaders to your organization's mission and goals.
 
Proposals most likely to be selected are those that challenge the participants and provide some opportunity for creativity on the part of the team.
 
If your agency or organization could make use of a LM project team, we encourage you to complete a Community Action Project Proposal Form by August 16.  Feel free to pass this information along.

Community Service Day: Saturday, October 23, 2010

Plan projects now for Montgomery County's Community Service Day: Saturday, October 23, 2010. Hosting a project for groups, small or large, is an excellent opportunity to get needed work done, and to let the community know who you are and what you do all year long. It is also a great way for you to establish new relationships with volunteers and businesses. 

Publicity about Community Service Day is beginning now.  We want you to be ready to take advantage of individuals and groups from around the county who will be looking for meaningful volunteer opportunities on this weekend of service. Saturday and Sunday projects are needed. If you are planning weekday projects, plan them for the week before and we'll publicize those along with the weekend requests.  

Once you have identified your project for the weekend of October 23^rd, enter it into the Volunteer Center's online database. Log-in to your account and create a new "Opportunity".  (If your project will be taking place outdoors, please note a rain plan in the description field.) Please contact us if you need help with the database.  

As a special incentive, those agencies who register projects by September 15^th will be featured in a Gazette ad in early October.
