Chamber Members: Be On The Lookout!

Annually we ask the Chamber membership to exercise their privilege of selecting the upcoming year's leadership team. The Nominating Committee is finalizing the slate of Officers and At Large Members to serve on the 2013-14 Olney Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Ballots will be mailed to all members later this week.

At the same time we ask that you voice your opinion on one of our biggest honors: the Olney Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year. The Business Person of the Year is an individual that has gone above and beyond in their support of the Chamber and the Greater Olney-Sandy Spring area community over the past year. This year's nominees are Bette Buffington of RE/MAX Realty Centre, Toni Davis of Brooke Grove Retirement Village, and Joe McCall of The Winery at Olney. Short descriptions of their Chamber and community contributions will be included with the ballots.

Please look for your ballots and return them by May 31. The BPOY winner will be announced, and the new Board of Directors sworn in, at the Annual Awards and Installation Dinner June 13.

Call for Candidates

The Olney Chamber of Commerce is seeking members interested in election to its Board of Directors. The Board meets from 7:30-9:00AM on the first Wednesday of each month in the Community Room of RE/MAX Realty Centre, 3300 Olney-Sandy Spring Road, Olney. Candidates are expected to volunteer time and energy in support of various Chamber programs, events and activities, some of which occur outside normal business hours. In return, the candidate will have increased visibility in the Olney community and enhanced opportunity for business development.

To be eligible, the candidate, and/or the organization she/he represents, must be a Chamber member in good standing for a period of not less than one year prior to selection by the Nominating Committee as a candidate to fill a vacancy on the Board of Directors. A member will be considered in good standing if:

Next GOCA meeting is May 14th at 7:30 pm

The May 14th GOCA meeting will have State Senators and Delegates from District 14 and District 19 to review this past Legislative Session. Click here to see full agenda. Each official will have a few minutes to summarize what he/she feels was important followed by a Question and Answer Session. To be sure the officials receive your questions, you can send questions in advance through the GOCA website.

Some other events happening before our meeting:

* On Tuesday, April 30, 2013 there will be a Community Outreach Meeting starting at 7:00 pm at Longwood Recreation Center (19300 Georgia Ave) to see the proposed project on the Marian Fathers Property (located north of Owens Road, south of Goldmine Road, east of Georgia Avenue), address concerns about its impact on the community, and to notify those attending the meeting of their right to participate in the review process. Adjacent communities include Manor Oaks, Olney Mill, Tanterra, and Oak Grove.

* On Thursday, May 2, 2013 starting late in the afternoon (no exact time is listed - it is item 12), the Planning Board will discuss the Rural Open Space Policy. From the discussion at the April's GOCA meeting, one goal of this discussion is to establish a procedure to swap rural open space. Each year the Olney Chamber of Commerce awards scholarships to high school seniors from the greater Olney area. Guidelines and applications have already been made available to students through their school Career Centers with confidence that Chamber members and the community will continue to support this exemplary program. Two types of scholarship applications are available on the Chamber web site, one for students with learning disabilities, and one for students without. The amount of the award, and number of awards given, depends solely on the donations received from businesses and individuals. In previous years the community’s generosity has resulted in 3-4 scholarships ranging from $750 to $1,500. Five Local Women Nominated for
8th Annual ATHENA Award

Five women, each heralded for their “dedication of self and generosity of spirit,” have been nominated for the 8th Annual Greater Olney-Sandy Spring ATHENA Award. Established by the Olney Chamber of Commerce and Brooke Grove Foundation (BGF) and named in memory of BGF founder, Eleanor Howe Marston, R.N., the program was created to honor women for community service and professional and personal leadership. The nominees for the 2013 award are: Lisa Creamer, Hospice Caring volunteer; Jane DiGirolamo, Our Lady of Good Counsel High School; Amy Marshall, Olney Theatre Center; Carolyn Parker, Drama Kids International; and Peggy Lyn Speicher, The Speicher Team of RE/MAX Realty Centre.

At 2:00 PM on Friday, May 3, 2013, nominees will be honored and the recipient announced during an afternoon tea in the terrace level conference room of Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Award-winning actress and Smithsonian Scholar Mary Ann Jung will serve as the event’s featured speaker. Seats may be reserved for $20 each. Proceeds benefit the Olney Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund and the Brooke Grove Foundation Sue Howe Memorial Scholarship Fund. Video Program: here's a great example of how Chamber members support one another! Gorman's Garments and Gear offers uniforms (school, sports, etc.), gifts and promotional products. They also provide logo apparel for many businesses. To demonstrate appreciation for their corporate customers, they recently began posting a series of Customer Profiles on their website and facebook page. These videos, produced by Connor Gorman, Director of Marketing, promote the client's business and highlight some of their services. The first profile featured an interview with Jose Vasquez of The Tavern, a loyal Chamber member who recently hosted our Networking Breakfast event. Be Prepared to Stop: travel on Georgia Avenue is now a little safer. A traffic light with turn signals was recently installed at the intersection with Emory Church Road. It replaces the flashing red light. Northbound drivers sometimes had difficulty timing oncoming traffic when turning into the Roots Market shopping area, just north of the intersection, or to Shaare Tefila Congregation, just south of it on the service road. With the flashing yellow gone, drivers on Georgia Avenue need to be ready for a complete stop on red.

Each year GOCA holds an awards ceremony to honor individuals and local organizations for their contribution to the Olney area. This year's awards ceremony is Sunday, March 3rd at Longwood Recreation Center (19300 Georgia Ave) from 2-4.

ALL ARE WELCOME

The first hour is a meet and greet and there will be many people to greet: Congressman John Sarbanes, County Executive Ike Leggett, County Council President Nancy Navarro, County Councilmembers Marc Elrich, Han Reimer, Nancy Floreen, George Leventhal, Craig Rice, State Senator Karen Montgomery, State Delegates Anne Kaiser, Eric Luedtke, Craig Zucker, Bonnie Cullison, Ben Kramer, Board of Education members Phil Kauffman, Judy Docca, and school principals Donna Redmond Jones (Rosa Parks MS), Paul Barker (Good Counsel HS). It is a great time to meet these officials and share any concerns you have.

Sincere thanks to Jose Vasquez and his staff at The Tavern Restaurant for hosting last week's Networking Breakfast. Members and guests were served a delicious, hearty meal while presenting a 3-5 minute overview of their business. Many eyes were opened to services offered by Chamber members, and multiple leads were exchanged. Mollie Smith, Servpro of Rockville/Olney, donated the door prize that was won by Anne Moriarty of Heart-Minder.

Not to be outdone, The Winery at Olney hosted the February Biz Buzz networking soiree the following night. Joe, Jeremy and Dale, as always, did a great job with hot appetizers, warm atmosphere and their tasty varietals. The amount of the award and number of awards given depends solely on donations received from businesses like yours. In past years the Chamber has awarded 3-4 scholarships ranging from $750 - $1,500, and it is our goal to do the same this year. For more information call the Chamber office at 301-774-7117. Thursday - Biz Buzz - as Winter enters its final month on February 21, you will be warm and cozy at this month's Biz Buzz.
